I received this 2017 HP laptop (HP Notebook - 15-ba113cl) from a friend for updating OS, and interestingly, it does not save BIOS setting changes, so I can't change the setting to boot from a USB. I tried the below method and nothing worked:
- changed RTC battery, it does not help
- try to load the latest BIOS by entering F2, but after a few write/verify loops, it tells me that it failed to update
However, I changed the BIOS date/time, and it saved correctly.
Any thoughts on what I should try next?

Hi @papperyz, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since your HP Notebook - 15-ba113cl is not saving BIOS setting changes but does retain the date/time after changing the RTC battery, it suggests that the issue may not be related to CMOS power loss but rather a corrupted BIOS or a write-protection mechanism. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Reset BIOS to Defaults and Save Again
- Enter BIOS (F10 at startup).
- Select Load Setup Defaults (F9).
- Save and exit (F10).
- Reboot and re-enter BIOS to check if settings persist.
Check for Write Protection in BIOS
- Some HP BIOS versions have a setting that prevents changes from being saved.
- Look for any BIOS Write Protection or Secure Boot Lock option and disable it.
Enable Legacy Support / Disable Secure Boot
- If you’re trying to boot from USB and Secure Boot is enabled, it may block changes.
- Enter BIOS → Security → Disable Secure Boot.
- Enable Legacy Support if available.
- Save changes and restart.
Force Update BIOS via Recovery Mode
Since your BIOS update is failing, try the following:
- Download the latest BIOS update for HP Notebook - 15-ba113cl from HP’s support site.
- Create a BIOS recovery USB:
- Run the downloaded BIOS file on another PC.
- Choose Create Recovery USB.
- Insert the USB into the HP laptop.
- Power on while holding Windows + B (or Windows + V).
- If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the prompts.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Max3Aj, Thank you the reply... here are my updates
- Reset BIOS to Defaults and Save Again
- No, default settings won't save either
- Check for Write Protection in BIOS
- I could not find such settings... even I find them I could not make them take effect, because they won't save
- Enable Legacy Support / Disable Secure Boot
- Enabled legacy support, and disabled Secure Boot, they won't save
- Force Update BIOS via Recovery Mode
- I have not tried these, I could give it a try and let you know.
BTW, can you help me check if there are any write protection jump on the mother board?

try this
- Restart HP computer.
- Press the Esc key (or F12) to enter Boot Menu.
- select the usb key, then press return
the above steps use the change boot device on powerup
this method performs a temporary override of the bios boot setting
