EliteDesk 800 G4 mini

I saw the G4 mini had 3 storage connectors.

two M.2 slot AND one SATA

However, the M.2 connector in the middle with the SATA case.

Is there a way to use all three storage (two M.2 + one SATA)?

@googolcore,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Please specify if you got the "DM 35W", the "DM 65W" or the "DM 95W" model: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini Business PC (35 W/65 W/95 W) Specifications | HP® Customer Support.

@googolcore,

In the meanwhile, I found no HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Minis with three internal drives.  Hoever, you could "triple-store" your HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini, like this User did with two internal M.2 NVMe SSDs and one external 5TB HDD:

I just picked up a G4 Mini and don't have the CPU I ordered yet, but I do see your SSD SATA caddy and two M.2 2280 connectors. There is another M.2 that is for the WLAN. I am planning to use a M.2 SATA drive and not a NVME in what I think is the preferred M.2 slot. I can only assume you can run two M.2 drives but I don't know. I just wanted to confirm that you do get the impression you can run three internal drives.

@CEG3RD,

Yes, you can install two M.2 NVMe SSDs, and one 2.5-inch (7mm) SATA HDD/SSD. Make sure that your HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM came with a SATA caddy for the latter, as seen here to the left:

Obviously, I would use an M.2 NVMe SSD as your primary (boot) drive.

Here is what I just discovered on running three drives. If you populate the second M.2 slot the SSD 2.5 caddy will no longer fit and it will sit on top of the M.2 drive. It's an odd design, but I don't think they want you to press down hard enough on the caddy to force the caddy to seat and be slid forward. There is a cutout in the bottom of the caddy to accommodate the actual M.2 connector but the drive just sits up too high.  It looks me that if you run two M.2 drives you have to leave the caddy out. I'm still waiting on the CPU I ordered for mine, but I have been playing with getting everything ready.

The upside is I think the M.2 drives should operate a little cooler without the 2.5 inch caddy on top of them.

@CEG3RD,

Interesting -HP engineering clearly intended to make two M.2 NVMe SSDs and one SATA drive to fit, but I agree with you that the caddy should not touch the M.2 NVMe SSD, let alone pushing down on it.  In that case, you could consider not using the caddy, use Velcro tape or something like that to secure an HDD/SSD in place.

I have since found a thread where people in the past made this discovery and there is a lot of head shaking as to why this failing in design. Yep, you would have to get creative to run the 2.5 SSD without the caddy.
