HP Z820 Workstation

I need a Processor that supports AVX2 on Z820.

Is it possible to use Xeon E5 2699 v3 or Intel Xeon E5 2698 v4?

@sergiopezzo,

Welcome to our peer-to-peer HP Community Forum!

It is not possible.  The Intel C602 chipset does not support Xeon v3 and v4 processors: CPU-Upgrade: Intel C602 chipset processor support.

Also confirmed here: UserBenchmark: HP Z820 Workstation Compatible Components.

[EDIT:] There is not a great deal of difference between AVX and AVX2. The only difference between AVX and AVX2 for floating point code is the availability of a new FMA instruction – both AVX and AVX2 have 256-bit FP registers. On average, AVX2 would give you about an 8% performance improvement over AVX. Nothing wrong per se with popular Xeon processors for the HP Z820 Workstation such as the E5-2690 v2, E5-2687W v2, or E5-2667 v2.

Kind Regards,

Hi, NonSequitur777,

Thanks for the quick reply. It's because of the new Adobe package (Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder...) that needs AVX2 in order to deliver performance improvements. But I kindly appreciate your orientation.

assuming your statement "AVX2" actually means Advanced Vector Extensions 2.0, then no, you will need a Zx40 series for v4 cpu support that does have AVX2 support

the v2 cpu's only support AVX

the z820 the chipset will not support v3 or later cpu's only the E5-26xx cpu original release (also called v1) and the later v2 E5-26xx release capable

the z440 is rather cheap, or the HP z640 or the lenovo p520 series pricer but worth the current selling price on ebay
