Can Z820 use RAID (SCU/SAS) boot from a Z Turbo PCIe/Samsung 950Pro NVMe Win 10.

According to this link, probably not unless there is a workaround. If there is one, could someone advise me, please?

in general, the sata drives should be on the  4 Intel "SCU" sata ports located next to the two normal sata  ports

 

note to use the "SCU" ports the intel RSTe driver must be installed

 

the 7 white LSI SAS/SATA ports in general should not be used, and the LSI bios should be disabled in the HP bios settings doing so will decrease boot times and still allow the lsi ports to be seen/used in windows only the lsi boot raid config options will be disabled

 

i would also disable the network port's bios's also as most users do not boot from a network connection

short answer, not really worth doing

 

long answer, the process to get a nvme raid setup bootable on a z820 is expensive to "VERY" expensive and gives minimal benefits, also when it develops issues it will be almost impossible to repair/fix

a single 950 will be just about as fast as a raid 0 setup, and backup software to a external or internal nvme drive is just as fast as a raid 1 on the z820

 

remember the zx20 line of workstations are limited to a 3.75TB or less size for the boot drive

Thank you very much for your quick response. 

I managed to set up the Z Turbo PCIe/Samsung 950Pro NVMe in slot one on the motherboard with the information provided by you previously. I've got Barracuda 5TB (only 4.5TB is recognised) drives in all the drawers in the workstation. Here is their map from EaseUS Partition Manager. I eventually found out from another contributor on the HP forum that the Mass Storage Options ROMS has to be on EFI, not LEGACY, for the BIOS to recognise the IOS on the NVMe card is on there.

So if drive bays 1-3 are in a SAS socket except for bay 0, which is plugged into SATA 0. I imagine that is why Control C is not working at BIOS boot if drawer 0 is not plugged into a SAS socket. But you have mentioned that each drawer will only recognise up to 3.25TB in a raid configuration, not 4.5TB p/d. So the upshot is the RAID will only work if all drive bay slots are plugged into SAS or SCU ports, and the Z Turbo PCIe/Samsung 950Pro will not recognise any RAID configuration because the Z Turbo PCIE card doesn't have a controller on the board to see a RAID setup.  Unless I swap it out for another, you pointed to in your reply referring to Highpoint. HighPoint does quite a few models. Is the 7103 the only model that will work, or are there others?
