Can i overclock with XTU on HP z400 and xw8400 ?

HP Recommended

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello guys,

I just got a HP z400 with x5550 CPU ( soon to be upgraded to x5690 )  and  a xw8400 with dual x5365 CPUs.

HP bios does not provide any settings for overclock so i was thinking of using XTU or any other similar program to overclock.

Any recommendations is it possible ?

Thank you

Biomencanoid,

I note on Passmark Performance Test baselines that there are Xeon X5690s' overclocked up to- remarkably- 4.7GHz, but none are on HP or Dell motherboards. There are 108 HP / X5690 systems tested.

The O/C examples mean that the X5690 multiplier must be unlocked.  As Intel Extreme Tuning Utility ("XTU") is free, give it a try.  It is recommended to try more than one version of XTU and consider a search for "Intel Extreme Tuning Utility XTU previous versions" or similar.

If XTU works on the HP's, it will be apparent immediately as the controls will be available. If it is not applicable, everything will be greyed out.

Watch the voltages and temperatures carefully and if it works, run the Prime 95 stress test for a long while- an hour minimum.  The X5690 is rated  to 0.750V-1.350V and 78.5C.

As you may know, the X58 is triple channel memory- sets of 3 modules and the best results will be to have symmetrical RAM configuration for both CPU's- the same number of the same size of the same model of the same brand is best.  I always use RAM that has the HP part number sticker on it.

I had a dual X5690 system, a Dell Precision T5500 and it was very good performer.  I like X58 / LGA1366 very much and that platform is completely usable today.

I recommend Passmark Performance Test- there's a free 30-day trial- to test the system against similar systems. Depending on the applications- really almost all of them, the Single Thread Mark is important. The Average STM for the X5690  =   1535

Let us know how it works.

XTU and throttle stop does not work all the important settings are greyed-out.

I have ordered an W3680 those CPUs should have an unlocked multiplier hopefully i can reach a stable 4ghz i don't think its safe to try any higher.

Also i ordered 32gb of ram as the guys at greenpcgamers tested the z400 and it worked. My xw8400 already has 32gb and one x5365 CPU, still waiting for a heatsink to use the 2nd one

Here are my 2 threads on the workstations:

I should probably make build threads here as well and you guys posted on the results

Biomecanoid,

Given the baseline listings on Passmark and my experience with LGA1366,  it seemed highly unlikely that XTU would work.

CPU:  The W3680 will only  work as a single processor.  The LGA1366 dual processors have an "X" prefix. The W3680 may be used and overclocked in the z400- there are a couple on Passmark @ 4.2 and 4.3GHz, but the W3680 will not work in the xw8400 dual CPU system.

Memory:  X58 motherboards use triple channel memory for optimal performance, for example: 3X 4GB, 3X 8GB , 6X 4GB , 6X 8GB , and in dual processor systems, the configuration should be exactly the same: number, capacity, brand for both processors.

May I ask what these systems are used for?

My first laptop, two weeks ago:

HP ZBook 17 G2: (2015 ) i7-4940MX Extreme (4C@3.1/4.0GHz) / 32GB / Quadro K3100M 4GB / Kingston 480GB SATA SSD > 17.3" LCD 1920 X1080 panel or externally to HP 2711x 27" LCD > Logitech 533 _2.1 speaker system

[Passmark System Rating: = 3980 / CPU = 10140 / 2D = 618 / 3D = 2779 / Mem = 2559 Disk = 4662 / Single Thread Mark = 2387 [1.3.20

* I plan the w3680 for the z400 since it is overclockable via XTU and Throttlestop.

* For the x8400 i have dual x5365

* For the z400 i have ordered 32gb of matching hynix 8GB 1x8GB PC3L-12800E 1.35v UDIMM HMT41GU7AFR8A-PB

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ECC-unbuffered-Memory-hynix-8GB-1x8GB-PC3L-12800E-1-35v-UDIMM-HMT41GU7AFR8A...

it actually just arrived now and i will test it in the evening. Greenpcgamers have tested the setup and proved it worked there is a forum on that and relevant videos

* The x8400 i got it with 32gb already installed some of the dimm don't match  but it passed memtest twice with no issues.

May I ask what these systems are used for?

These are decommissioned servers that i am converting to Gaming PCs
