I wish to be able to play video with audio through an HDMI input to a Pioneer AV Receiver which is then connected to a Sony Bravia "Smart TV" using the ARC interconnection between the Receiver and the TV. I am able to get a good video image but no audio. Other devices connected to the Receiver work perfectly—the DVD and Blu-Ray ports and an Amazon or Roku streaming device connected to the Receiver in the appropriate ports work extremely well.
Obviously I struggle with this issue because I want to take advantage of the excellent stereo speakers connected to the Pioneer Receiver. There's a world of difference in audio quality.
I realize that the problem may have something to do with the configuration of the Pioneer Receiver, but before jumping to conclusions about that. let me say this: Using the same DisplayPort to HDMI cable connected directly to the TV set, I get excellent video and "good" audio. Why I say "good" rather than excellent is due to the limitations of the internal speakers in the TV set. But it works immediately and with no special effort. Yet when I connect to an ordinary "plain vanilla" HDMI jack on the Receiver, I get no audio at all.
The questions I have relate to the EliteBook's output format. Is there anything strange or non-compliant about the audio out of the DisplayPort, either due to connector pinout considerations, signal coding or sample rate? I am trying to work with Pioneer's customer support to solve this problem, but so far it appears unlikely that they will even respond let along explain and/or offer a solution.
What could be different about the HDMI ports on the Pioneer AV Receiver and the HDMI port on the Sony TV set? I'd appreciate your insights and information. Thank you for reading this far.

not all cables are made equally when it comes to signal quality and encryption standards and it's impossible to tell a good cable from a bad one visually you need a dedicated cable tester for this
because of the above, trying replacement cables from different venders is the only thing you can do
the HP display port on business class/workstation class systems follow the defined standards exactly, and the EliteBook 8570w uses DisplayPort revision 1.1 (also, as i previously mentioned to you) if you stated the model of the receiver device in question you might get more help

The Pioneer AV Receiver is a Model VSX-1124-k. I was not at home when I wrote the original post about this, and I was uncertain of the model number at the time.
I did try two different DisplayPort to HDMI cables by different manufacturers which I also failed to mention.
I just ordered two new cable by different manufacturers. At least one of them states it is DP 1.1 compliant and the other claims it supports digital and analog standards. Neither are all that expensive, so I will hope for a good outcome. Thanks for your help.
