I need a DVD optical drive for my computer to watch movies and for some specialized storage tasks.  Is the optional internal optical drive available for this computer?  I can't find a part number for it.  Per the maintenance manual it appears to be user installable.  If not, is a USB 3.0 external optical drive just as fast?  Thank you for you assistance.

your model uses a normal 9.5mm SATA  drive ( not the thicker 12.7 ones) which is the format used in newer laptops

check inside your system for a  unused normal SATA data cable and if not there buy one,

you might also need the 15pin to 6pin power adapter if your system came without a optical drive

and you can the you can hack/make the small green locking tab the holds the internal optical in place

external CD/DVD players and burners do not require  usb 3.0 speeds they work fine on usb 2.0

and yes a external optical will work the same as a internal one

if you want you can buy a external one and usually remove the internal optical and place it in your system and keep the ext case if you ever want to have a external unit again

Thanks for the info.

After looking around for HP 9.5mm DVD drives, seems I need to pick one that has the plate on the front of the drawer.   Seems many do not have that plate.  Thanks for the recommendation.  Also, any pictures of the green locking tab so I know what I need to DIY?  And thanks for the link for the cable adapter.

Thanks.

yes you will need a optical drive that includes a faceplate quite a few used drives include this and it's usually shown in the sellers pictures if the drive includes the faceplate, so this is really a non issue

for the HP specific green locking tab, google is your friend if you want to see one however making your own is nothing more than  securing the optical in place somehow i've used duct tape double sided foam strips plastic washers over the years to secure drives in place

Thanks again for the help.  I did find a new 9.5mm HP optical drive with the green locking tab and all the cables included so I should be good to go.  The tray bezel is different from mine but that's not a huge deal.
