The front USB ports are working selectively. In windows explorer (and bios) a USB 3.0 device won't be detected, tried multiple devices including a sata to usb converter. However, when I plug in a USB 2.0 flash disk, it is detected fine. The ports in the back work fine, no issues. The port is enabled in the bios, xhci is enable. I also tried disabling it but it doesn't help. BIOS version 2.57 installed. Is this a hardware issue or do I need to reinstall the BIOS? I am completely confused. Thanks.

Googling I have read that this problem can occur if the "20" pin cable is damaged, partially connected (loose) or pins bent

here is one example

https://superuser.com/questions/1347158/what-can-cause-a-usb-3-0-port-to-revert-back-to-usb-2-0

another "fix" was made by allowing some slack in the cable so that it was no longer bent or twisted by a cable tie.

The 20 (19) pin connector to front panel has both USB2 and USB3 wiring. and it seems that the USB2 is used when usb3 has a problem

Look for bent pin or try another cable.  Post back here if you fix the problem.

Hope this helps

That did the trick! The cable seemed to be plugged in but I guess the slack wasn't enough for it to be flat against the slot. I re-plugged it on both sides and it works fine now. Thanks.
