Hello,
I plan to use my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF primarily for Jellyfin (transcoding) and Immich (hardware acceleration). Here are my current system specifications:
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS x86_64
- Kernel: 6.8.0-51-generic
- CPU: Intel i5-7500 @ 3.8GHz
- RAM: 2x 8 GB + 2x 16 GB (total 48 GB)
- Current GPU: Intel HD Graphics 630
- PSU: HP Pavilion 280, 288, 285, and Erica2 - 400W (Part No. 942332-001), with a 6-pin (4+2) PCIe connector
I am considering the following GPUs:
- Asus GTX 1650 LP OC for around €100 (182mm length).
- ASRock Intel Arc A380 Low Profile 6GB for approximately €120.
- MSI GeForce RTX 3050 LP 6GB GDDR6 for €145.
- Gigabyte RTX 4060 OC Low Profile 8G GDDR6 128Bit for €327 (requires modifying the HDD compartment for an extra 10mm).
The RTX 4060 requires an 8-pin PCIe connector, but my PSU only has a 6-pin connector.
- Would using a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter be sufficient for the RTX 4060 setup?
- Which GPU would you recommend for my use case and system constraints?
Thank you for your assistance!

for GPU selection do this simple check:
look at the HP "quickspecs" for you model system
https://media.flixcar.com/f360cdn/HP-3834417918-4aa6-9230enuc.pdf
note if any power supply upgrades are available for it
(and if necessary upgrade if selected card requires it)
look at available HP approved cards, and select last listed card which is usually the highest end card HP has approved
then google that cards specs for it's power draw in watts (and if it requires a upgraded power supply)
in your case the only HP approved card is the NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 730 (2 GB) which is a 50 watt half length single slot card
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gt-730.c2590
your nvidia 1650 card is a dual slot full length (some OEM cards are dual slot half length) 75 watt card
------------------------------------------------------------------
use that wattage/pwr supply as a reference when selecting your video card, as long as the HP max HP card wattage and your card selection wattage are within 7 watts then your card will work power wise and all that's left is to check the physical fit by again comparing the HP card dimensions to your card
bottom line............... only the nvidia 730 half length single slot card will fit in your SFF system

Actually, your HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF as powered by a 400-watt power supply, can be fitted with a number of low-profile graphics cards, of which I would recommend either the MSI GeForce RTX 3050 LP 6GB GDDR6 (70-watt TDP) or the Gigabyte RTX 4060 OC Low Profile 8GB GDDR6 (115-watt TDP).
Interesting, an HP p/n: 942332-001 power supply is usually equipped with a single 6+2-pin PCIe power cable. In any regards, since your 6-pin PCIe power cable can provide up to 12V x 16A = 192-watt of power, it is more than sufficient to power the RTX 4060 LP when you use a 6-pin PCIe to 8-pin PCIe power cable adapter.
I would definitely recommend the RTX 4060 LP for superior Jellyfin (transcoding) and Immich (hardware acceleration) processing.

You know what, maybe I'm just dumb and didn't actually check the number of pins, I took it at the given value for some reason... I'll look into it when I power off my server next time. Thanks for the advice on the GPU

as i recall this system came with a 180 watt power supply and a optional 250 watt unit neither of which have a AUX GPU power connector
are you saying the HP p/n: 942332-001 is a drop in 400 watt replacement power supply for this SFF model?
01-06-2025 10:58 PM
That is affirmative: I have used both the 400-watt power supply with p/n: 942332-001 as well as the 500-watt power supply with p/n: L77487-003. These power supplies can easily be purchased online, such as via eBay. Both power supplies fit like a glove inside the HP EliteDesk 800 G3/4/5 SFF platforms.
All you need for a low-profile RTX 4060 is the 400-watt power supply.
