Hello,

I have a Elitedesk 800 G5 on the bench for refurbishment - I have inadvertantly ordered an I5-9600K processor for it rather than the I5-9600.

Anyone any idea if the K verison will work to save me having to re-order?

Vince

Hi, Vince:

It should because this userbenchmarking website is showing reports of folks installing the i9-9900K in the SFF model series.

UserBenchmark: HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF Compatible Components

My only concern is the heat sink.

Here is a parts list for the a model that shows it has a fan rated for the 95W processor and there is a 95W heat sink available.

HP PartSurfer

I would check the parts list for the product number of the PC you are working on and see if it indicates what heat sink comes with it.

The parts may only be rated for the 65W processors.

Thanks a lot - I'll certainly check out the cooling aspect of it.

I did try a few months ago to install an Arctic aftermarket cooler on a G4 but the problem was that there is insufficient clearance under the motherboard.

Ver y grateful for your help.

@ShirleyVL,

Btw, the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF was an upgrade project of mine, and the top Userbenchmark entries with the i7-9700KF, i9-9900KF and the mighty 127-watt TDP i9-9900KS processors were all mine.  Nice to see that even after two years, my HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF record(s) still stand -but I digress.

The CPU heatsink I used has p/n: L04397-001 (L30413-001) "HP Heatsink Gen Intel 95W Ent18 S / HP SPS-HEATSINK INTEL95W ELITEDESK800 G4 SFF".  This heatsink is difficult to come by and if it is offered for sale, it tends to be expensive (here is a PRC eBay Seller purchase option).

And there are other, more 'Xtreme' CPU cooling options available: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Impossible-to-significantly-imp....

Very interesting.

I've found a 95 watt cooler on ebay for an 1155 socket.  Not sure if this will fit the board as its an 1151 socket but it was next to no money and can always go on the shelf until i need it.

HP Fan HP 95w CPU Fan Processor HeatSink Cooler Socket LGA1155 PN 644724-001

If the worst comes to the worst I've got a large collection of minis including a couple of G5s  with I5-9500T that I can  use if necessary with a stock cooler which I have gathering dust.  I've spoken to the guy who asked me to do this for him and he's no gamer so he is singularly unconcernd what is under the bonnet (sorry that UK English for hood) and is more comcerned about reliablity than anything else.

He bought it off a friend of a friend and it was barebone with no CPU or cooler but incredibly dirty inside.  It now looks very good, even though i say so myself and is now waiting the parts to be delivered.

Again many thanks for your help.

Just fior the record it has a 250 power supply which ought to be sufficient.

@vinceg0orc,

Just to be clear: we are talking about the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF.

The 95-watt heatsink you referenced should fit (based on my experience with trying to make alternative LGAxxxx heatsinks work), but you'll have to try and see.  [EDIT:] If it fits, lest I forgot to mention it, you can double-stack cooling fans on top of the heatsink (using a 4-pin PWM splitter cable), which will substantially increase the airflow through the heatsink, and reduce thermals.

What do you mean with "a 250 power supply which ought to be sufficient"? -Sufficient for what, exactly?

Btw, there are 400 and 500-watt power supplies available for the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF.

Sufficient for the CPU.  I won't be fitting any power hungry GPUs to his system as he is happy with the on-board  graphics.

@vinceg0orc,

Yes: your Intel Core i5-9600K (6-Cores, 6-Threads, 3.70 GHz up to 4.60 GHz, 95-watt TDP) will happily purr along in your HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF powered by the 250-watt power supply.
