Hello,

My Son wants to upgrade his  HP Omen 30L gaming PC - AMD Ryzen 7 RX 5700, 2 TB HDD & 512 GB SSD.

It gets a bit hot so we added a water cooler last year, and a few other bits I can't remember.

Will a GeoForce RTX 4070 Super GPU and either a Ryzen 9 5900X or AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU be compatible with this model??

Thanks in advance.

Hi @OriginalMacca,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Upgrading your HP Omen 30L gaming PC with a GeForce RTX 4070 Super GPU and either a Ryzen 9 5900X or AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU is possible, but there are several factors to consider for compatibility:

1. Motherboard Compatibility:

  • Ryzen 9 5900X: This CPU is based on the AM4 socket, which is compatible with most motherboards used in the HP Omen 30L, provided they support BIOS updates for the 5000 series processors. You may need to update the BIOS to ensure compatibility.
  • Ryzen 9 7950X: This CPU uses the newer AM5 socket, which is not compatible with the AM4 motherboards typically found in the HP Omen 30L. To use the Ryzen 9 7950X, you would need to replace the motherboard, which could complicate the upgrade process due to potential proprietary components and form factor constraints in the Omen 30L.

2. Power Supply (PSU):

  • The GeForce RTX 4070 Super is a powerful GPU, and it typically requires a significant power supply. You should check that your existing PSU has enough wattage to support both the new GPU and the upgraded CPU. The RTX 4070 Super might require around 300W on its own, so a PSU of at least 750W to 850W is recommended, depending on your entire system’s power draw.
  • If your current PSU is lower than this, you would need to upgrade it as well.

3. Cooling:

  • Since you've already added a water cooler, your system should be better equipped to handle the heat generated by a high-end CPU like the Ryzen 9 5900X. However, upgrading to the Ryzen 9 7950X (if you were to change the motherboard) would generate even more heat, and you would need to ensure that your cooling solution is adequate.
  • Additionally, make sure that your case has good airflow, as the RTX 4070 Super will also add to the thermal load.

4. Physical Space:

  • The RTX 4070 Super is a large GPU. Ensure that your HP Omen 30L case has enough physical space to accommodate it. Check the dimensions of the GPU and compare them with the available space inside your case.

5. BIOS and Firmware:

  • Before upgrading to the Ryzen 9 5900X, ensure that your motherboard’s BIOS is updated to a version that supports the Ryzen 5000 series. This step is crucial to avoid compatibility issues.

Note: Ryzen 9 5900X and GeForce RTX 4070 Super should be compatible with your Omen 30L, assuming your motherboard supports the Ryzen 5000 series with a BIOS update and your PSU is sufficient.

  • Ryzen 9 7950X is not compatible without a motherboard upgrade due to its AM5 socket requirement, which could be challenging in the Omen 30L case.

If you're primarily looking for a performance boost without major modifications, the Ryzen 9 5900X paired with the RTX 4070 Super would be a powerful and compatible upgrade.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi Elohi_NR

Thanks so much for getting back to me, I really do appreciate your advice.

I think we are going to go with what you suggest but how can I find out if the motherboard supports the Ryzen 5000 series? Also can you recommend a 850W PSU that fits his HP Omen 30L please?

Its his Birthday next week 😊

Thanks in advance.

some Omen systems have non standard power supplies, (not ATX compatible) as such you are limited to what HP offers the Omen 30L's stock unit as i recall is a 500 watt unit part number L26279-800 which is a ATX compatible unit

look at the plug end of the main power supply connector is it 24 pins? if so you most likely have a ATX compatible motherboard the next question is what is the physical size of the existing supply as all ATX supplies are a standard size Dimensions of an ATX power supply are

150 mm width, 86 mm height, and typically 140 mm depth,

although the depth can vary from brand to brand

https://www.lifewire.com/atx-24-pin-12v-power-supply-pinout-2624578

note that the HP ATX power supply may not match the above colors and may simply have all wires black or some other colors, but it will have a 24 pin main power connector

so yes it appears you can replace/upgrade your existing HP Omen 30L's supply with a 3rd party ATX supply with greater wattage, just keep to name brand units like corsair, delta, cooler master (and so on)
