HP RP9 G1 AiO Retail System, Model 9018
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am having issues with HP RP9 G1 AiO Retail System, Model 9018   powering on after a BIOS Update.

When I run HP Image Assistant to update the drivers and firmware,  I download the critical BIOS Update Version 0.2.53 A1. I then reboot the computer and it'll prompt me to update the BIOS. I then update the BIOS and the machine restarts but doesn't turn back on?

The machine just then has the power light for the RP9 flashing white every 2-3 seconds and nothing happens.

I've left the machine like that overnight and arrived the next morning to the same thing. I've taken the power cable out of the RP9, held the power button down to perform a power drainage and still no luck. Even replacing the power brick in the RP9 still has issues.

I've done this to a few new RP9 machines, updating the BIOS and all the same problem. I even took a HP RP9 machine fresh out of the box, updating the BIOS and the same issue? Is this something related to this new BIOS update thats been rolled out that corrupts the machine? This is becoming a serious issue and looks like we can only post pone the BIOS update.

If we can't proceed without updating the BIOS will we be dead in the water?

Is there any urgent workaround we can do to get this fixed because it seems to make the machines dead? Can this specific BIOS version please be looked into by HP for further investigation?

I have a few serial numbers of some machines that are having these problems.

Hi team,

Further to this. We have reset the CMOS on one of the RP9 Machines. The Power Light is now solid but still no display on the screen.

Another machine i have also tested. I didn't run HP Image Assistant. I simply just installed Windows Updates below is a picture of the updates on the machine that installed

I then rebooted the machine, it updated the BIOS and I ran into the same problem.

I believe this specific Windows Update is what is causing the problem? - 2021-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5004945)

I powered on another HP RP9 and installed Windows Updates. Without installing KB5004945, the machine rebooted and didn't prompt for any BIOS Update nor did I run into any issues. The machine powered up fine.

Kind Regards

Billy

Did you get a solution to this?

Hi GJGroenemans,

Thanks for your post.

HP ended up just replacing the motherboards for all our machines that had this problem. After the motherboards were replaced we ran the BIOS update and it seemed to be fine.

HP aren't able to work out what has caused this, though I think it might just be a bad batch of Motherboards going around for brand new HP RP9's.

I made a thread about this on the Microsoft Community Forum and it appeared someone else had a similar issue. I will need to follow up with them and see if they have had any other problems.

Here is a link to that thread if you are interested - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/microsoft-kb5004945-patch-bios-update-issues/0...

So far for any new machines I just lock the BIOS Version and disable Native OS Firmware Upgrade. Haven't had any problems since but will still continue to monitor carefully.

Thanks

Billy

download the latest bios from HP manually, extract the SP98595 bios 2.40  file by running it but do not do the update (

cancel the bios update) or use winzip/winrar to extract the SP98595 file

(you can run it and see if it updates, if not read on)

Note: If you have Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption (BDE) enabled on your system, it is recommended that BDE be suspended temporarily before the BIOS is updated. You should also obtain your BDE recovery password or recovery PIN before suspending BDE. After the BIOS is flashed, BDE can be resumed.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-rp9-g1-retail-system/8737474

locate the extracted SP folder,  and READ THE TWO HISTORY_xxx files to determine which bios matches your system

(flash.htm are full flash update docs)

move the correct bios file to the root of C: and reboot, enter bios  using F10, in bios select bios update option and  select the extracted bios file it should now update once done reboot enter bios and set any necessary bios options

Organised a service call to replace motherboard.
