Hi, i bought this card just incase I need TB2 port:

https://store.hp.com/SwitzerlandStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=F3F43AA&opt=&sel=ACC&lang=en-CH

It did not come with the internal cable. I am now wondering if this cable is absolutely necessary for using the card to connect for example an external TB2 HDD. Why is a cable like this needed? Thanks for any replys.

There are two HP Thunderbolt cards... TB2 and TB3, and they all need a GPIO cable.  The TB2 card can work in the ZX20 and ZX40 workstations.  The TB3 card looks like it is only going to work in the Z4/Z6/Z8 G4 family of workstations.  There are posts in this forum about that...

HERE  is a thread that recently included where to find an installation manual for the HP Thunderbolt 2 card and some other good info:

For the TB2 card the v2 of the user manual is  HERE .

For the TB3 card:  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06162348

In the thread above you will see that my link to the HP Thunderbolt 2 v2 manual gives the HP GPIO cable part numbers... there are 3 possible cables, two for the ZX20 family, and the ZX40 family of workstations all use a single HP part number cable, 751366-001.  On eBay currently one costs about $20.00 USD.  I'd get that if I was you.... your card will not work in your Z840 without it.  Read the manual.... your TB2 card needs to go into a specific ZX40 PCIe slot.  Here are two pictures of the specific cable you need:
