quite the rabbit hole, for such a simple fan question..............................

i have HP 6300 pro and elite 8300 SFF systems at home  both use the same case, and it looks very similar to the Z220 case

anyway, my systems have the rear location for a fan but neither came with a shroud or fan,  and i did not get a fan error when i added the fastest cpu the system supports regardless i added a 60mm rear fan bolted directly to the rear case

hopefully the "OP" will get the correct fan/mounting parts he needs and lets us know how it turned out

SDH & DGroves,

Got the fan (834547-001) from HP, installed it, 901 error is gone...

Thank you all for your help.

Have a great day !

If you did a "ghetto mod" install a picture of that would be helpful for others in the future.

Again, some sellers on the net think this is a 60 x 25 mm fan (which is used in a Z240 SFF)... it is truly a 70 x 25 mm fan. The Foxconn part number on the fan is PIA070G12H, with the 7 there meaning 70 mm. These are pretty hard to find.

Congrats...

There is no rear fan on the SFF.

You talking about a SFF Z2 G4? That is the one the OP was having problems with. Not a Z240 SFF...

TeamWasabi in his second post explained that this particular SFF he was dealing with had, out of the blue, started to throw a demand for a rear case fan, and adding one was the easiest way to placate the machine. Hence, he did the Ghetto Mod and that solved the issue. He did not use an official Z2 G4 rear case fan and fan holder... the smaller fan he bought was a "Z240 SFF" rear case fan, as shown on the shipping box above, from HP... not an official Z2 G7 SFF rear case fan. Doesn't matter, adding that will fix the issue.

When you see such a demand from a HP workstation any PWM fan will work to make it go away... the shape of the plastic on the end plug needs to fit onto the 4-pin motherboard fan header, however. To have this show up out of the blue is very rare.
