@OzonAir,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Your HP Z4 G4 Workstation (4FJ67EP), according to: HP PartSurfer, is fitted with a mighty 1000-watt power supply (p/n: L20514-001), equipped with two 8-pin PCIe power cables.

This means that you could pretty much install whatever graphics card you can afford, as long as you watch the GPU's dimensions (LxWxH) for fit inside your chassis, and doesn't exceed 2 x 8-pin PCIe power cables demand.

This means that, yes, an RX 580 would do just fine, as it only requires a 500-watt minimum PSU and one 8-pin PCIe power cable.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

CAUTION:

I took a look at the link directly... there are two power supplies for the Z4 G4 in there, the max being 750W. There is one power supply for the Z6 G4, 1000W. That is not the one for your Z4 G4 workstations... won't fit.

In the past all of the HP workstation's PCIe supplemental power cables have been rated to carry significantly more than the "ATX standard" with the HP being rated for 18A, and being 6 wires each instead of 8. HP has had very high quality 6-to-8 adapters to use the 6-wire plus adapter to satisfy 8-wire socket(s) on high end video cards. 75W comes up from the slot, and (12V x 18A = Watts) comes from each PCIe supplemental power cable.

So, do a bit more research before you buy... confirm you have the 750W HP power supply in your Z4 G4 workstations... If need be you could buy a 750W recycled one from eBay.What your Z4 G4 can run...What your Z4 G4 can run...What your Z4 G4 cannot run...What your Z4 G4 cannot run...

@SDH,

Thank you for your observation.

When I looked at the PartSurfer link (p/n: 4FJ67EP), to be honest, this was what I saw when I searched for "1000":

Call it confirmation bias.  My bad.

So, @OzonAir, please check out the part number/wattage of your power supply.

If you got the 465-watt power supply (p/n: L12279-001), this would still work to power an RX 580, but you'll have to ascertain if this power supply has one 8-pin (6+2-) PCIe power cable.
