to SDH, i agree that in most cases staying with the system makers power supplies when dealing with non standard parts is the best course and should only be ignored if you are willing to toast the entire system  IE-board/mem/cpu/pwr supply/drives, and so on

consumer systems are another matter, i have seen some 3rd tier venders ship/install crap parts that if replaced will enhance the overall system performance/reliability but this needs to be looked case by case basis and first tier makers almost never have this issue since they 1. don't want returns 2. reputation of quality value oriented systems does matter to them

go on ebay, and look at those 750 watt power supplies for 25.00 including shipping

then look at what a 750 watt supply from corsair/pc-pwr cooling/seasonic, and so on cost

Download your Z400 Technical and Service Manual at:

http://jp.ext.hp.com/lib/doc/manual/workstation/hp_workstation/504630_001.pdf

Save that for your reference.  Open it and do a search in the PDF document for BIST.  Read what it says for each entry of BIST.... there are not that many.

page 119 of service manual:

Testing power supply

Before replacing the power supply, use the Built-In Self-Test (BIST) feature to learn if the power supply still works.

To test the power supply:

1. Unplug the AC power.

2. Remove the internal power supply cables from system board (you do not need to remove power supply from chassis).

3. Plug in AC power and verify the following:

● If the green BIST LED on the rear of the workstation is illuminated and the fan is spinning, the power supply is functional. ● If the green BIST LED is not illuminated or the fan is not spinning, replace the power supply.

See the Rear panel components section of this service guide to locate the BIST LED on this workstation.
