HP Z440
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone,

We are slowly transitioning from equipping our employees with HP Z440 to the new Z4 G4 series. The original plan is to upgrade every HP Z440 to its maximum RAM capacity for hypervisor-purposes, but our testing bench got stuck with Error 520 - Memory fan (2) is not installed. We already bought everything according to HP Z440 Technical Manual, even for the Memory Fan. We are at BIOS version 2.52 Rev A.

Is there anyway to fix or at least, bypassing this issue during boot? Since working from home isn't feasible when someone have to tap Enter just to get through that Error 520.

Thanks and have a nice day.

This error implies that a  fan  in your system is not working or is intermittent or is missing

open the case, and confirm  that the fan that sits over the rear memory slots is spinning

this rear memory cooler shroud/fan as i recall is part# 663345-001 google for it to see pictures of it

you also have a rear case fan and a optional Front Cooling Fan Assembly part#  647113-001 that is required if using  all ram slots and/or a high power cpu or all pci-e slots filled

make sure all fans are connected to the proper motherboard fan headers

confirm by looking at the z420 maintenance and service manual

Hi DGroves,

Both of the fans are spinning and working correctly, and all 5 fans are installed and running (Front Fan, Rear fan, CPU and 2 memory fans). And I think the manual from Z440 is differ from Z420, since I cross-referenced both of them.

Scubby.
