Hello,
I want to upgrade the memory of my HP Z8 Fury G5 and was wondering if anybody has done benchmarks on memory ranks.
From the HP Z Technical Whitepaper I understand that single rank modules in all 16 memory slots should provide the best performance.
Example for a 512 GB memory configuration:
#1 32 GB memory module, DDR5-4800MT/s, 16Gb Die Density, RDIMM, 2 Rank x 8
#2 32 GB memory module, DDR5-4800MT/s, 16Gb Die Density, RDIMM, 1 Rank x 4
Both memory dimms feature the following timings: CL=40 • Ext Timing 40-39-39
So #2 is the best choice for performance, if so, how much in % is it faster - is it even noticeable?
Greeting,
Vasquez

Perhaps you can glean some RAM performance from HP Z8 Fury G5 Workstation Desktop PC User benchmarks via UserBenchmark[dot]com:

in general, dual rank dimms will perform the best on most current/modern systems, this is due to a dual rank dimm being seen as two dimms electrically by the memory controller in regards to ram access speed
there are some systems (usually servers) that may perform better using single or quad rank dimms, again it depends on the systems memory controller/chipset
either way, the difference between ranks is rather small and running a system in dual or quad channel over single channel has a much larger effect

Hello,
and thanks for the support - who would have thought, that buying memory can be so difficult?
According to the „HP Z Technical White Paper“ it’s simple: „To increase overall performance, install multiple ranks in each channel. This can be accomplished by installing 2 single ranked DIMMs in the same channel. „
and
this https://www.oempcworld.com/support/singlevsdualram.html page, single rank should offer the highest performance.
So ... it's interesting. 🙂
Greetings,
