Hi,
I have a Z800 workstation and I'm trying to find details on how to install SAS HDs?
Do I need a caddy / converter or something?
Which ports are faster SATA or SAS?
What would be the speed of SATA / SAS drives configured as in RAID-5
Thanks

you know, reading the z800 user guide/service manual/quickspecs will most likely have answered your questions which is why HP takes the time to create them and make them available for online reading or download
in general and for most users the Intel "SCU" SATA 3GBps and the two Intel SATA 3GBps ports next to the scu ports are preferred as the default sata ports, the LSI ports are usually only used if you need more drives or have large sequential files such as video
there is no speed difference between controllers for most users/file types however only the LSI controlled ports along the bottom of the motherboard will work with SAS/SATA drives
raid-5 IS NOT RECOMMENDED on either controller as neither support cach ram or battery backup and a dedicated controller for the xor calculations
if you must use raid-5 install a adaptec ASR-6805T, this card supports JBOD and raid modes and can be found on ebay for around 15/25 dollars (you will need forward breakout cables (not the reverse type) and 4 male to male sata adapters to allow the card to connect to the four internal hotswap drive bays
