Hello,

I'm having trouble installing or reinstalling Windows on my HP Z820 workstation. The issue I'm encountering is as follows:

  1. Bootable USB Detection: The bootable USB drive is recognized in the BIOS/UEFI boot order.
  2. Problem Encountered: After selecting the bootable USB and pressing Enter, the machine displays a blank screen and restarts itself.
  3. I have tried different USB ports (including USB 2.0 ports) and tested bootable media like a DVD, but the issue persists.

please any help to resolve this issue is appreciated,

Many thnaks!

Hi @Alex3356

Try the following, when powering on the PC press the F9 key several times, the boot menu appears and select the USB there

Thanks Resistencia, I can see the F9 Boot option but once I select USB boot, the screen turned blank and workstation restarted itself in 15-20 seconds.

could be corrupted usb key. go to the MS site and from there

redownload the windows installation files, i recommend you download the ISO version instead of the usb key method

once you have the ISO image downloaded use "rufus" to read the ISO image and locally on your computer create a bootable usb key installer this method is usually more reliable in preventing/detecting bad install media

also during the OS install during the page where it asks which drive to install to remove any existing partitions before clicking on the "next" button let windows create any necessary partitions do not manually create them

Hi Dgroves,

Thanks for the reply.

I created a few W10 and W11 bootable USB using the MSF media creation tool but have no luck. The USB key can boot into Windows setup on another workstation.

try leaving the hardware to the minimum, a single memory, a single GPu, a single disk, as little as possible and try reinstalling windows.

the z820 has 3 different Hard Drive controllers two of them require a driver loaded during OS setup via the F6 method

the only controller that does not require a setup driver is the two Grey MS SATA 3 6GBps ports, (next to the 5 white SCU ports) which by default should have the bootable HD and CD/DVD drive connected

the 5 WHITE Intel "SCU" ports require the intel  RSTEe driver found on the HP z820 websites driver page

the 7 LSI SAS/SATA ports along the bottom of the motherboard require the LSI  2308 "Mustang" driver

Hi Resistencia,

I have removed everything except the video card from the workstation but still have no luck, the workstation just keep restarting after attempting to boot from the USB key.

I have also brought a new USB key and formatted it using the MSF media creation tool but the results are the same, the problem may be the workstation itself.

Thanks

Hi DGroves,

Thanks for the reply.

The problem is that the workstation cannot boot up with any bootable USB. To isolate the problem, I have created a Ubuntu bootable media that can boot up on another machine but not the Z820, confirming the USB key is good.

Thanks for the suggestion, the new hard disk is connected to the white SATA port and I have reconnected it to one of the two grey SATA ports, and now the workstation can detect the new drive.

I just think it may be a graphic problem, what model of graphic do you have?
