HP Z820 Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey HP Z820 Gurus: I am having a reoccurring problem with my z820, when it is shutdown then restarted it will freeze on the bios mini oRom window showing gibberish. I have a ps2 keyboard attached to press ESC on power up but it freezes on "enting Startup menu". The only way around this is to move the jumper in E15 and bootup from USB Stick with Bios. Weird thing is the computer will turn on blue light then flash  RED in following order but never go back to Blue:

Red: 8 times with beeps,16 with beep , 8 times with beeps,8 times with beeps,8 times with beeps,8 times with beeps, 8 times no beeps, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps,, 8 times no beeps, with Fans running at full speed. I finally pull the power cord, then replace the jumper to pins 2 & 3, reinsert the CMOS Battery, then reinsert the power cord and restart, then it acts normal although I have to press ESC to adjust the bootup menu.... Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Is there a list somewhere that tell what all the  order of the Red flashing lights mean? Thanks for your assistance

i really wish people would reconsider their "my computer has a problem, FLASH THE BIOS" mentality

your original issue was most likely due to the system looking for a bootable device that was not ready or working correctly, i've seen many usb external drive boxes connected to systems cause a long boot delay

your constant enabling a bios flash/recovery is  going to kill the system...........................

with the power off disconnect all external/internal storage devices except for the boot device

start the system, NOTE WHAT THE MINI OROM IS SAYING, and post it here (it's not rubbish!!!)

and then wait for the system to continue the boot it can take up to 10 min for the system to scan all the SAS and SATA ports which the z820 has once in the bios use the reset to FACTORY defaults not the stored defaults, if you don't know how to do this post here

once the factory defaults are loaded disable the LSI boot rom in the z820 bios do not disable the LSI device only the LSI boot rom

D Groves, thank you for replying.  When the computer is turned off again and if I goes into this freeze mode yes, I will take a pic of the screen and post it. When I mentioned that the mini OROM was displaying gibberish I meant that it would post hexadecimal code and would just remain there for hours. I even left it on over night one hoping it would correct itself. I normally do have an external SATA drive attached for it contains the audio sample library for music production, but even if everything is disconnected and only down to a ps2 keyboard and one monitor, this still would happen and the keyboard would not even be recognize, no CTL-ALT-Delete would work, the bios would not even recognize a ESC before powering on or while starting up. Thanks again for your assistance and Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to you!

DGroves: Well my HP Z820is back in "I won't start mode" Every time Windows update forces me to update, this happens. I usually just leave the computer on so that it will not have to go through the reboot cycle. I may just have to buy a new computer as it is interrupting with my work and I have deadlines approaching tomorrow! Yikes! I have uploaded pictures and video of the process, IMG_0820[1].JPGIMG_0819[1].JPG

reset bios to factory defaults go into the bios and set mini orom display to disabled, also disable hp boot logo and then enable full screen error messages also disable onboard LSI Boot rom do not disable the LSI device only disable the LSI boot rom doing this retains windows ability to see/use the LSI ports but you will no longer be able to boot from them it also speeds up the boot process note that to use the intel "scu" ports next to the normal sata 6 ports you will need the Intel/HP RSTe package either 4.6 or 4.3 revisions work anything later than 4.6 no longer has support for the z820 c602 chipset

get a small sata drive and connect it to  one of the two SATA 3 6GBps ports

used v2 z820 systems are approx. 150.00 on ebay

however unless you need the feature set of the z820

you may want to look at the lenovo p520 around 180$ with 900watt pwr 2135 6core cpu (not p520c)

or the dell z840 equivalent precision model 7920 workstation 375 600 dollars (or more)
