Hi,

Until this morning I did not own a Z820, my question has always been about cooling a Z840, after I upgrade the CPU's.

As I see it, I have 2 options.

Option #1 (Preferred)

  • Use the supported N3R54AA Z840 Z Coolers - aka the '3D Vapor Cooler'
  • If these were available anywhere I would order them, connect them to the Z840's CPUx AUX cooler headers and that should be it.

Option #2

  • Try to use an unsupported 635869-002 HP Z820 Liquid Coolers.
  • Question #1 - Will this power from the Z840's 3-pin CPUx AUX cooler headers or will I need to use a 3rd party controller to run/control the pump?
  • Question #2 - If I am not connecting the Liquid Cooler to the Z840's CPUx AUX cooler headers, should I still short the pins 1 & 3 to change the BIOS's cooling profile.

Cheers,

M

I've not had issues buying from China, where these things are made... wait time is not an issue generally.

Thank you.

I have been using ebay.co.uk which I thought pulled through international shipping listings from ebay.com - weirdly this one wasn't.

Cheers,

M

EDIT: Ordered - thank you again!

if you want to use the z820 water cooler kit on the z840 (for whatever reason) then i would short the 1 and 3 pins on the aux cooler headers and then power the AIO water pump(s) from  a sata to dual 3 pin adapter note that this method runs the pump(s) at full speed just like the on the z820 but without any bios speed reporting of the AIO pump(s) as the sense pin is not connected the z840 only has one free unused 3 pin header near the rear bottom of the case  (header 23 as i recall)

@SDH

Just to say thanks again.

The Z coolers arrived after 13 days, which is pretty good considering it was free shipping. No customs charges either, which was a pleasant surprise.

One slightly bent fin, apart from that they look perfect.

Happy to help... those are hard to find so you got very lucky to find 4. Please let us know how things go after the install.

Will do @SDH.

I ordered 4 off E5-2699A V4's from an eBay seller in France this morning. Sadly he only actually had 2 in stock, so has cancelled the half the order.

Has anyone experience of ordering Intel server CPUs from China? There are loads on eBay, but I am super wary about fakes/etc and also aware that I need both to have matching stepping's.

Is there any way to test if a CPU is genuine or not?

Cheers

while fakes on cpu's do exist i doubt that any scammer would take a obsolete cpu and do this as there is no real proffit involved doing so

just look for a seller that has a return policy, and avoid ones that are not retail releases as HP workstations systems do not like engineering/QL pre production cpu's

If you go on Intel's site with a search for that you'll see under ordering and compliance tab there is only 1 Spec Code = only 1 "stepping". More recently it has been pretty rare to see more than one. That SR30Y is laser etched on the stainless heat spreader top. I search for both that and the official name... sometimes one search gives a treasure not found by the other approach. A good discount by recycling... $4938.00 USD new vs about $200.00 each on eBay.

Look at the China seller's number of sales and rating... Even the French sellers may be suspect as you've found...    😉
