I'm looking at the spec sheet and it is saying the PCI-e is only x2? There is no x3? Also how many generations of the 840 are there? I know for my z420 there are 2. One you can run v1 and other v2 xeons.

1. Below is what HP says about the Z840 slots... most are PCIe3. You'll be able to see this cut/paste image from the HP technical and service manual shortly (page 56). Go google "c04823811 pdf" and take a look yourself:
2. Unlike the ZX00 and ZX20 families of HP workstations there are no two versions for the ZX40 family, which is nice.

The HP Z840 only runs on v3 and v4 Xeon processors.
There is no PCIe gen 3 available on any Z840. If you want PCIe gen 3 you have to step up to the HP Z8 G4.

You are completely correct! My bad.
I got it mixed up with the HP G4 Z8.
The Z8 has no PCIe 2 slots. Therefore I bought a refurbished HP Z840.
My apologies for the misinformation!
