Power button on Z4  workstation is stuck at red.
No error on BIOS diagnostics or anywhere obvious. And it is not blinking, so did not find such in HP support pages.

The workstaion is operating as normal, booted fine.

Can anyone help to find out the meaing of  Power Button Soild Red ?

@TAAU,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, a solid red power button on the HP Z4 G4 Workstation (assuming that this is your Workstation), especially when the system boots and operates normally, can be puzzling. While red indicators often signal an issue, the absence of any error in BIOS diagnostics or system performance suggests it might not be critical. Here are a few steps to help clarify the situation:

  1. Check Power and Cooling Indicators:

    • In some HP workstations, a solid red power button might indicate a power supply or thermal condition. However, since the system is functioning normally, it could be a false positive.
    • Use compressed ("canned") air to thoroughly blow out your power supply.
  2. Inspect System Logs:

    • Open the HP Performance Advisor or the Windows Event Viewer to look for any logged warnings or errors related to power or thermal management:
    • To open the HP Performance Advisor on your HP Z4 workstation, follow these steps:

      1. Check Installation:

        • HP Performance Advisor typically comes pre-installed on HP workstations. However, if it’s not installed, you can download it from here.
      2. Launching the Application:

        • Press the Windows Key and type HP Performance Advisor into the search bar.
        • Select the application from the results to launch it.
      3. Using the Tool:

        • Once opened, HP Performance Advisor will display system information, performance metrics, and logs that may provide clues about the solid red power button.
      4. Installation (If Missing):

        • If HP Performance Advisor is not installed:
          • Visit the official HP Support website and search for "HP Performance Advisor" in the Software and Drivers section for your specific workstation model.
          • Download and install the tool, then relaunch it.
  3. Update Firmware and Drivers:

    • Ensure the BIOS, chipset, and other firmware are up to date. Sometimes, firmware bugs can cause incorrect LED behavior.
  4. Inspect Front Panel Connections:

    • If the system was recently opened or serviced, check the connection of the front panel to the motherboard. A misconnection can sometimes lead to irregular LED behavior.
  5. Clear CMOS:

    • Resetting the CMOS could resolve any miscommunication between the hardware and the firmware.
  6. Documentation Review:

    • If these steps don't resolve the issue, consult the HP Z4 G4 Maintenance and Service Guide for additional LED diagnostics. Sometimes, less common indicators aren’t listed on general support pages.
  7. Contact HP Support:

    • If the solid red light persists without clear documentation or explanation, contacting HP Support Australia for more in-depth diagnostics might be necessary.

Let me know if you find anything from the steps above, and I’ll continue to assist you!

Kind Regards,
