first of all why are you trying to enter safe or recovery mode?
your description appears to indicate that the recovery partition is unable to boot or perhaps restore /repair the main os
you may find it more effective in the long run to simply reinstall the OS doing this will correct a bad recovery partition and also correct any issues with the main OS

uefi has no advantages on a boot drive for this older system "Legacy" is the preferred setting as the Bios will not support a drive/partition size over 3.98 TB in size
stay with Legacy unless you require a non booting DATA drive that is over 4TB which can be formatted as "GPT"
