Thanks for this -- I did note that there were build-your-own recovery options. There's some pre-installation environment options. I did see there was a list of machines that support cloud-based recovery but the Z220 wasn't on the list. I had downloaded all of the latest drivers and a bare-bones Winodws 7 install works with the generic drivers while you worked your way through installing the proper drivers -- but I took the hard road for sure. It would have saved some time to have an all-in-one install . I wasn't aware that HP might provide reinstallation media.
I might have a look at making my own recovery option with ntlite just to have the back up option if required.
