So basically I got an rx 580 with my 525w power supply. I can't find somewhere to plug the external power into. Do I need to just upgrade to a 700w?

Yes, and you probably should also hunt down one of the optional Z440 front case fans if you don't already have one, given the added power you'll end up using. That is comprised of a black plastic fan holder and a HP PMW fan that is proper for your case. Those kits are easy to find and to install, part number 647113-001 to search for on eBay, and the lowest price for the rectangular fan holder/square fan insert is about 25.00 from China (where Foxconn makes them for HP). Shipping takes some added time, but I've never had a problem with such purchases from China.

Your power supply, present, and what you need:

Note that you can find the one you want for about 40.00 on eBay, used. I've never bought a bad used HP power supply on eBay and I've upgraded a lot of them this way. They are plug and play. Here's the two pictures, and you also will want to review this recent post on the high amperage that even one of the HP supplemental PCIe cable provides, HERE .

What you have...What you have...What you need...What you need...
