I need to update the IFX TPM 1.2 Version 4.40 on my HP Z640 Workstation

@SiemensSass,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Great question -and I’d be happy to help clarify what’s going on with TPM and Windows 11 eligibility for your HP Z640 Workstation -as my assumption is that this issue prompted you to post your question.

You're quite correct that your system currently uses IFX TPM 1.2 Version 4.40, and HP has provided firmware updates for certain models that allow upgrading the TPM to version 2.0, provided the motherboard and BIOS support it.

However, it's important to note that TPM 2.0 is only one part of Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements. Even if you were able to successfully update the TPM firmware, your system will still not be officially eligible for Windows 11 due to the unsupported processor.

The HP Z640 typically ships with Intel Xeon E5 v3/v4 processors, and while powerful and reliable for workstation tasks, these CPUs are not on Microsoft’s list of supported processors for Windows 11. Likewise, even high-end alternatives like the Intel Core i7-6900K are not eligible, as they belong to an earlier generation (Broadwell-E) that predates Microsoft's cutoff.

Summary:

  • TPM 2.0 could potentially be enabled with HP firmware and BIOS support.

  • Your CPU (Xeon or i7-6900K) is not supported for Windows 11.

  • 🔐Secure Boot and UEFI must also be configured correctly, but even that won’t override the CPU requirement.

Recommendation:

If you're still interested in running Windows 11 on your Z640 — and you're aware that it won't be officially supported by Microsoft — you can safely and reliably bypass the system checks using one of several trusted methods.

Here’s an excellent video tutorial that walks through the process clearly:

▶️How to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware (Tips2Fix)

This method is commonly used by advanced users and tech enthusiasts, and many have reported good results -just keep in mind that future Windows 11 feature updates may require manual intervention.

In case you still want to go ahead and try to update TPM &/or Enable Secure Boot:

1.) TPM Firmware Upgrade for HP Z640:

To upgrade from TPM 1.2 to 2.0 on your Z640:

  1. Download the firmware update here (HP SoftPaq):
    👉HP TPM Configuration Utility (SP124152)

  2. HP Support Page for SP124152: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-z640-workstation/6936220/swItemId/ob-3....
  3. After installing the utility, follow HP’s guidance to switch from TPM 1.2 to TPM 2.0. You may need to:

    • Enable the TPM in BIOS

    • Clear the TPM before flashing

    • Reboot once or twice during the update cycle

📝Note: Always back up your data and ensure BitLocker is suspended (if in use) before updating the TPM.

2.) Secure Boot on the Z640:

Yes -your HP Z640 does support Secure Boot. Here's how to check and enable it:

  1. Tap F10 during startup to enter the BIOS.

  2. Navigate to Security > Secure Boot Configuration.

  3. If Secure Boot is disabled, you can enable it there — but note:

    • You must be running in UEFI mode, not legacy BIOS.

    • Switching to UEFI may require converting your system drive from MBR to GPT.

Kind Regards,
