HP Z4 G4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Z4 G4 workstation and need to install a full-size standard 5.25" LG Blu-ray drive. It's not slimline. Here is the drive:

The HP QuickSpecs doc for the HP Z4 G4 states that "Installing an optical drive into Z4 G4 requires a 5.25” external bay adapter (Option Kit Part number NQ099A)." The doc doesn't seem to specify if this adapter is for a slimline or 5.25" drive. I've researched this part and it appears it's for adding a 3.5" hard drive in a 5.25" bay so it doesn't look like it's what I need. I found out this bracket was originally designed to work with select HP Z200, Z400, Z600, and Z800 workstations.

Searching the forum l found this post for a similar Z440 workstation (again I have a current Z4 G4) and the user suggested that no tray is needed only the correct HP black mounting screws.

Can anyone confirm what I actually need to install this drive in a Z4 G4? I'd like to have confirmation before I take my machine apart for the install. There are no optical drives in the computer, only the base front USB i/o ports.

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance.

why not answer this yourself by reading the HP docs on this item?

the tray will take a STD laptop 9.5mm optical drive and a Hard drive

however i would skip the tray and simply install your  5.25 optical blu-ray drive, it's a slide in fit

@mavs-fan -- I need to install a full-size standard 5.25" LG Blu-ray drive.

Do you have a "spare" USB 3 port on your computer?

If so, consider an external CD/DVD/Blu-Ray device, connected to that "fast" USB port.

Yes, this is the "lazy-person's" solution, but it allows you to connect the device to any future computer that might come WITHOUT an internal CD/DVD/BluRay device.

DGroves, thank you. I was able to install the 5.25" optical Blu-ray drive in the Z4 G4. It was an extremely tight fit in terms of depth, but it's in and all appears good.

Itsmyname, I appreciate your kind reply.

Yes, I was considering an external enclosure as a fallback plan and very well may go this route in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!
