Z420

A real bargain find: LSI MegaRAID 9271-8i that I intended to use in a Z420 with abunch of large SAS-disks to have the machine acts also as a backup server...

 

But plugging in the board hanged W10 during boot. No combination of settings made the boot sequence successful. Windows always hanged and displayed the BSD with a message "IRQ LESSEQUAL"... and "Storport.sys"  Searching the net only to find that I was not alone seeing this. Trying a fresh W10 install using 21H1 also hanged the Z420. Not until I tried an old 1903 did the installation complete after which the W10 drivers kindly provided by Avago loaded successfully.

 

I know that this is not an HP card but I have seen other LSI-boards used and sold through HP channels so the question is if there has to be a specific HP-branded BIOS flashed onto this board? I have used boards what seems more specifically modified to fit other vendors hardware and these boards can be made to work in an HP if a couple of traces to the PCIe-bus is cut...

 

Back in the good'ol MSDOS time, IRQ conflicts were often seen and could be handled by altering settings in the mobo BIOS but now, no such settings can be found. At least not in this early version of the BIOS/BootBlock (V0 CPU's only). The machine performs flawlessly in all other aspects.

sounds like a SMBus issue, the card you have appears to be for use in a specific server (OEM card not retail model) and as such the card uses the smbus to communicate with the server and this is known to cause issues when used in other systems that the card was not certified for

 

a possible fix is to mask off/cover up two pins on the cards pci-e contacts which will disable the cards connection to your computers smbus cover pins B5 and B6 with tape or nail polish then try the card again it might work, but i strongly advise using this configuration for anything of importance you need such as work related files
