Missing MAC Address

Hi,

I'm using Z840 for more than 2 years, and using Windows 11. Everything fine until one day I when I turn on, realized no internet connection and I checked in device manager/ network settings that no network adapter found. Try to restart couple times, still no network. After I enter the BIOS, I found that one of integrated ethernet No.2 losing MAC Address, just blank. Attached picture will shows... And even the ethernet NO.1 has MAC address and detected in Windows, I still cannot connect to network. I plugged in ethernet cable and nothing happen (no blinking light).

Beside of this everything works fine, I end up using usb lan adapter. However, is there any way that I can do/ setup in BIOS in order to bring back the MAC address for integrated ethernet No.2 ?

lightning or a power surge can fry a network card/port, however it usually also damages the router/cable modem

a bis update will not help as the section where the mac address is located is not updated when the bios is updated

attempting to modify the bios and re-add the mac's can not be done as it requires eprom burner and detailed knowledge of the bios structure and a method of of reading bios into a editor and currently there is no way to do this

simply disable the onboard nic(s) and install a network card (skip using server nics!!)

Thankyou @dgroves for your information. It make sesnse, I was leave for 2 weeks that time thats why I shutdown the Z840. When I turn it back on the problem happen, maybe  during 2 weeks time power surge or else strike coz  I didn't turn off the power supply. 

One more thing, maybe this is stupid question, however..... the Z840 is quite old now, and even it use server grade CPU, RAM, Etc I believe it suppose to be run 24/7 right ? Is it bad to turn it off or sleep every night ? \

there is no clear cut answer to your leave on or off, as several factors come into play

however in general powering off the system will save money and if using mech based drives make them last longer

the only possible downside is that electronic equipment tends to fail during powerup not while running and even this has studies showing that this may not be true in all cases

my personal take is that unless you require the system on due to running tasks, its better for home users to power down a system and ones like the z840 do tend to consume quite a bit of power, mine draws over 130 watts on average
