Can a internal 9/10 female usb cable be connected to a 5 pin male internal usb header on the motherboard?

yes you only really need 4 lines/pins for usb 2.0 pwr/gnd/ and 2 data lines the missing pin is a optional case system ground pin
just make sure you get the orientation correct, as applying power to the data lines or reverse power polarity on a usb header is sure to ruin your day (IE- kill the usb port)

the answer to your question is yes you can connect a single or dual usb female connector to a motherboard's 5 pin usb header (in a dual header only one usb is actually connected)
however,............the real question is...............what is the motherboards USB pinout? and does follow the USB standard pinout and of the five pins which end is pin one?
not all motherboards follow the USB pinout spec for onboard 5 pin headers and OEM motherboards are more likely to use a non standard pinout
see if the HP maintenance and service guide for your model has the pinouts of the motherboard
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-z2-tower-g4-workstation/20063240/manuals
so you really need to look at the board makers motherboard pinout specs before assuming that five pin header is usb, and that it follows the default usb pinout

Thank You DGroves For the quick response. After reviewing the motherboard diagram the port is labeled a 5 pin internal usb motherboard header. What is ironic is there 4 pins a blank and 1 more pin For a total of 5 pins one blank between pin 4 and pin 6. I have been told that usb ports do come that way.
Again thank you for the response.
