Hi there,
Just wanted to add to this post incase someone in future wants to set this up but I have a RevoDrive x2 960gb PCIE drive and the system boots, installs and run from this drive.
So I'm assuming NVME cheapy 3rd party cards which allow you to install a 2280NVME card don't work but a more purpose built device does. Don't know if a more name brand PCIE to NVME ssd card will work, but if someone trie it hopefully they share with us here.
Just wanted to add info for those who may look at this kind of setup... by the way it's SUPERFAST 😊.

As we have told people over and over,.....the z820/620/420 can not boot from a nvme drive as it lacks the necessary bios boot code to do so.
there were several SSD nvme cards made that had the missing nvme boot code in their bios, but all of them except for the samsung 950 pro have been out of production for some time and as such can only be found used it is the nvme code not the pci-e card that determines if a nvme ssd will be bootable, and this code must be on the computer's bios or the SSD'S firmware (and yes, i know about clover and Duet boot loaders but they are in a different category see my posts on this subject)
below are the known ssd's that could boot using their onboard nvme firmware
intel 750 pci-e card
Samsung 950 pro (still made and available but pricey!)
and according to your post the RevoDrive x2 also has the necessary nvme boot code in it's firmware
