Z440
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear community,

I´m using a 3 year old Z440 workstation running a Xeon E5 1620 v3 quad core CPU for 3D-Design and rendering. The CPU heatsink is the standard HP 749554-001 that came with the system. I´ve got my eyes on a refurbished E5 1680 v3 octa core CPU to bring the workstation up to date, being able to use it for another 2 to 3 years.

The question is, is anybody running the 1680 v3 CPU with the standard heatsink and can recommend it or will I need I need to buy the HP Z Cooler (HP P/N: 781907-001) to keep it from overheating. The HP Z cooler manual says so, but I thought I´d get some advice from all of you :).

And yes, the machine might be continuously  rendering 3D jobs for for 2 to 3 days .

Best regards

Chris

If you look HERE you'll see that the processor you've chosen has a max TDP of 140W.... as do many of the processors HP approved for the Z440 and Z640.

The standard heatsink/fan you refer to  is able to handle that just fine, the one you already own.  That is part #1 (749554-001, and the same item is also used in the Z640 if it is a single processor build).

With aggressive use of any workstation you want to make sure to optimize the cooling...... make sure to have a Z440 front PCIe fan/card guide kit in place or buy one, which is part #2 (753936-001).

Also make sure to have the separate cooling unit airflow guide (which has an individual fan over each of the two memory banks).  HERE is a link that shows 3 pics that will give you an idea of how it is used.  Look mainly at the bottom picture.  Here is its assembly part number:  HP 748799-001 (same item serves both the Z440 and the Z640 as their Memory Cooling Fan Assembly).  This part #3 sits freely over the standard heatsink/fan.  It works for any single-processor Z640, and any Z440.  It will not fit in a Z620 or Z420.

No need for the fancy (and very expensive) heatsink/fan you mentioned unless you got a huge discount on its price.

Hey SDH,

thank you for your reply. I opened up my machine yesterday and got a nice surprise as the front fan kit has already been installed by my vendor.

Concerning the memory fan...yes that is on my list as I already got i nice deal on a third pair of Hynix RAM and now I need to get rid of the memory fan warning sign on startup. Good thing I can book that part under additional CPU cooling).

BTW the CPU fan would have rated at 150 €, so no not the best deal.

Overall thank you for your reply as I can now finish my workstation upgrade process with the correct parts.

Best regards

Chris
