We bought an old Z840 workstation. To put in a graphics card we need the 6 pin to 8 pin pcie adapter but can't find it (at least not any reliable source). Using a different than original HP we read about issues like overheating and catching fire. 6 pin graphic cards are not really good enough for the purpose we want it for. Where can we get that adapter? Or are there any other ideas to solve that problem?

Here is a trusted source:

6pin to 8pin Power Supply Adapter - N1G35AA (zones.com)

Which looks like (when it is the real deal):

This is from HP...This is from HP...

Note that there are some sources that state they're selling you this one... some times it is a quite different looking item. Note the ferrite core at the P2 end for the real one.

Yours is a timely question... see this recent post from earlier today:

I just tried to order it there but it seems they don't want end customers. Only companies

Sorry... did not know that. We use them as a company.

I did some searching and getting the real thing was not smooth sailing. I'd next go straight to HP, and if that does not work I'd try the one NonSequitur777 identified, from eBay, the one from a US manufacturer with proper quality wiring. I know and trust NS777 and reviewed that US vendor's other items. Looks worth trying, and you know what to look for during try-out if you can't get the part from HP. Look for heat (not smoke). The adapter should feel cool to the touch over the wires and at both ends of the connectors. DGroves also may have an alternative vendor or advice.

well first of all HP made several 6 to 8 pin adapters all of which are high quality

460621-00x, (x=1/2/3) and is usually found in servers

but was also used in some workstations and can be either sleeved or unsleeved

N1G35AA or 721859-991

was usually shipped with workstations and their video card upgrade kits and is always sleeved and like the above one had several revisions, one of which used a different ferrite core

you can find these parts using google for sale on NUMEROUS WEBSITES at various prices from 20 to 60 dollars so search until you locate a lower price range part

last, as i previously posted the Lenovo or dell OEM 6to8 adapters are also of reasonably build quality but not as good as the HP one in my opinion
