HP Z440 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Please be forgiving with me: on the one hand, I unfortunately have virtually no idea about computers, and on the other hand, I have to formulate my question in a foreign language.

My MHP Z440 workstation is currently equipped with 16 GB RAM:

4 x 4GB ECC DIMM DDR4 17-15-15-36 4-51-16-3 1T

I wanted to increase the RAM and for this purpose I got a 16 GB memory module from Kingston (KTH-PL426/16G) which should fit. I had previously installed the memory cooler. However, the system gave error beeps and did not work.

Now my question: Do I always have to install four modules when expanding the memory. Is it therefore not possible to add just one, two or three modules to the existing four. Then I would have to change to another 4 or 8 GB modules for financial reasons.

If it is possible to add only single modules after all: How would these then have to be arranged on the mainboard for it to work?

Thank you very much for your help - I am desperate.

Martin

since you did not specify which language is your native tongue all i can do is provide english links, if you care to state your language perhaps we can provide links in that language

you can go a long way towards curing your "no idea" status on your z440 system by doing two steps

1.  read the user manual and service manual for the z440 that HP makes available on the HP z440 webpage

all white slots are used if only installing 4 ram modules for "quad" mode

using only 2 modules is "dual channel"

you cannot install ram in groups of 3

2. use this forums "search" function to read all of the previous posts on z440 ram posts

you can also do a google search using keywords "hp z440 ram configuration"

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04506309     (read the memory section)

you can also visit the Kingston or micron websites and see/buy memory that is guaranteed to be compatible

Thank you for your detailed answer to my question. I had consulted the user manual as well as many of the links you provided before. All this did not help me any further.

What was really helpful, however, were your sentences

  • all white slots are used if only installing 4 ram modules for "quad" mode
  • using only 2 modules is "dual channel"
  • you cannot install ram in groups of 3

I had either not found this anywhere or perhaps I had overlooked it. Now it was clear to me that it was not possible to add only one 16 GB module. When I installed two modules, it worked. I had not originally planned such an expensive upgrade, but now the workstation is running. 🙂

Thanks again for your help! 👍
