Good afternoon Paul Tikkanen,
I was able to find a new HP motherboard for  the HP Z420 workstation, and that fixed the problem. Now I am working to upgrade the memory (RAM) to 32GB.  The motherboard is 708615-001, and the processor is an Intel Xeon E5 1620V2 (3.7Ghz).
      From what I have read online this processor should allow DDR3 RAM that is either 800 / 1066 / 1333 / 1600 or 1866 ?
But when I have installed the new Corsair Vengeance 32GB RAM (model CMZ32GX3M4X1866C10) . . . at powerup the fans run faster than normal, and the Workstation does not display any start up on screen at all ?

The Corsair Vengeance that I am attempting to install indicates that it is 1866MHz, 1.5V, 32GB (4X8GB).

Is there a change that I need to make in BIOS with this RAM, or elsewhere to have this work correctly ?

Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated !

Sincerely,

Hi, Eric:

Below is the link to the memory configuration chart for the z420.

Technical Whitepaper

The max memory capacity per slot is 8 GB

Since there are 8 slots, the max would be 64 GB of memory.

The memory has to be ECC.

I don't see an ECC/non-ECC spec for the memory you bought and if it is a 32 GB chip, that is way too much.

I also think the timing spec is way too fast.  I believe it should be CL13.

The Quickspecs for the PC indicate that this is the supported 8 GB DDR3 1866 part number:

HP 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3-1866 ECC RAM E2Q93AA

DA - 14261 - Division

I highly recommend you look for memory that references that part number:

8GB DDR3-1866 2Rx8 PC3-14900 ECC UDIMM (HP E2Q93AA Equivalent) Server Memory RAM | eBay

Cheers,

Paul

Good evening Paul,
Thank you so much for your help.  I will look for a 32GB set (4X8GB) online.  Everything else is now working perfectly with the hep you gave me with the motherboard.  Your help is greatly appreciated !

I will let you know once I have the new RAM installed, how this works.

May you have a blessed week !

Good afternoon Paul,

I just received and installed the new RAM that you recommended in your previous post,
and it works perfectly.  This is a great blessing, especially since most have said that the HP Z420 would only handle DDR3 that was listed at 1600.  The ones you recommended are DDR 1866.

Thank you !
May God bless and keep you this week !

Good afternoon Paul,

I also have an HP Envy 17 ( intel core i7-6700hq ), that I use for the ministry while travelling and on speaking engagements. And I would like to if possible, upgrade the memory on this laptop as well. Right now it has 16GB of RAM. Is it possible to upgrade to 32GB ?

Thank you again for all of your help !
Sincerely,
Eric Wilson

Anytime, Eric.

Glad to have been of assistance.

Yes, since your notebook has an Intel  i7-6700HQ processor, that will support 2 x 16 GB of memory.

Suggested 16 GB memory chips:

Timetec 16GB DDR4 2400MHz PC4-19200 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL17 2Rx8 Dual Rank 260 Pin SODIMM Lapto...

God Bless you too, and have a great 4th of July weekend!

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you for  the information on the RAM upgrade.   I just looked up the actual model number of my HP Envy laptop, and it is:  Envy 17t-s000.  The processor is still an Intel i7-6700HQ, but does this model of HP Envy change or limit my maximum RAM to 16GB ?
I just would like to be sure, before ordering the RAM.

Thank you again !
Sincerely,

You're very welcome, Eric.

It's the processor model that's important, not the model series of the notebook.

Thank you Paul,
I am still learning, and your help and your patience is greatly appreciated !
The motherboard and RAM upgrade you suggested for our other ministry desktop (the HP Z420) works beautifully now,
and will be great help with our video editing work for the ministry.

May you have a blessed week !
