The last time I tried to upgrade the rem(memory) on the very computer that I'm typing this question on as we speak. The upgrade failed miserably as I thought that i could install a 128GB worth of ram. This was wrong on my part because it turns out that my machine has the version 1 motherboard, so it can't handle more than then 64G=gb worth of 1066Mhz ram.

Having learned to study the HP Provided support white papers on my models memory capabilities  I turned to the i ternet and was able to find a correctly matched 64GB memory kit on Cloud Ninjas however, in the past few hours this evening I've kept on going back and fourth between my cart on the CloudNinjas webstore ant the support white paper I've mentioned further up the post. I'm planning to strictly adhear to the recommended maximum allowable ,memory specified by HP as per the white paper that I'll link to right now.

Is your Z420 a version 1 or a version 2? If you don't know about that look it up here or via google. Best way is to go into BIOS and note down your boot block date.

We built up about 30 of the version 2 type Z420 and I can get you exactly the RAM we used in all of them... 8GB sticks, either 32 or 64GB total for most of those. Some 16GB sticks work too. These were eBay recycled server memory, specific type. I prefer to use identical RAM. Turns out the Z420 v2 works fine on ECC buffered just like the Z620 v2 does.

p.s. Your attached memory info sheet is way old, from when only the version 1 workstations existed. Things changed.

both kingston and crucial web sites have memory configurator's available on their websites that allow selecting compatible ram modules from them even if you don't buy from them at this time both sites have a wealth of useable information
