Hello
I'm trying to enable Hardware RAID 5 on an HP Workstation Z8 G4 with 4 SATA disks.
The computer has an M.2 disk connected to a riser (Withe UBUNTU OS), a graphics card and the disks are connected directly to the mootherboard. I don't have any other cards.
I searched the site but couldn't find any information about enabling RAID natively for this model.
Is it necessary to buy an external card?
Or is it possible to activate RAID in the BIOS / Console?
Thank you

i believe you have several options
the intel VROC key will enable raid features on the motherboard sata ports (pricey!)
a hardware raid controller can also be used (moderately cheap to pricey)
raid usage also requires that all raid disks reside on the same controller
(yes i know there are some unique exceptions)
so based on your description the SSD can not be part of a bootable raid unless you replace the riser with one that has more than one M.2 connector
the disks connected to the motherboard can be configured as raid 5 if you have 3 or more drives
you can also look into software only raid (such as "ZFS") which is now the preferred method due to today's disk capacity
- Enter the BIOS setup
- Select System Configuration
- Select Device Configurations
- Select RAID under SATA Device Mode
- Click Confirm
- Select an adapter
- Select RAID Properties
- Select Create IM Volume
- Select the primary disk for the IM volume
- Select Yes as the value for the Array Disk column
- Select the secondary disk for the IM volume
- Select Yes as the value for the Array Disk column
- Install the VROC in the plug below slot #7 near the bottom rear of the motherboard
- Boot into the HP Setup F10
- Enable Intel VROC NVMe Raid (VMD1)
- Select Create RAID Volume
- Select a RAID Volume
- View the RAID Volume's properties
