HP Z230 Base Model Tower Workstation

Hello,

I recently bought a second hand Motherboard from a HP Z230 tower workstation. That board was naked, no memory, no CPU, no back plate.

Now I've got a Xeon to put on LGA1150, ordered 32 MB DDR3 ECC, found a back plate for motherboard ports, now only missing a heatsink and since 2 days i'm not able to find a complete one as  axes are not standard for 1150 on HP Z230 they are 100mm lenght and 73 mm wide.

Do you have any idea where i can buy one original from HP  fit to this  MB ?

Well, I reply to myself, in fact, it seems there's no HP part number for this, as there's no HP part, the heatsink is screwed directly to the case.

So, I just ordered the heatsink part 712960-001 and found some nuts compatible to be able to install it on MB.

My problem is currently fixed  with Mc Gyver solution and this post can be closed.

Not sure if that came with W7Pro64 originally, but if so you should still be able to upgrade it to W10Pro64 for free. Then, using the "hybrid" approach detailed on this post, page 2, you likely will be able to upgrade to the latest version of W11 (v 22H2). I'd upgrade your BIOS first to the latest available, from within W7. I'd make sure to run with a nice recent SSD such as a later version Samsung or Intel 545s, and get about a 500 GB one.  I'm running some Z400 and Z600 workstations on that now. A HDD is fine for documents, but not for your boot/applications drive in this day and age. Even better, SSD for boot and SSD for documents drive.

Here's that post, HERE . I continue to upgrade using that method... and it is not just for the more recent HP workstations. So far 100% success if the HP box is running on a SSD. Still can't make a breakthrough if it is running on a Z Turbo Drive...

Kudos to you for your recycling, and we'd be happy to hear about your progress.

i believe the stock intel box cooler will also fit as the motherboard cpu mounting holes are the same size as retail boards that use this type cooler

Well in fact  i will try a Windows 2016 server essentials , boot is on a 240Gb SSD and  i've added 2 new WD RED 2TO for Stockage.

For now i wait for ECC  RAM to be delivered, original Heatsink from second hand HP model, and ordered in China a missing back plate to enclose ports .

Everything is installed in a 19 pouces case with HP original power bloc.

few days to wait for a first start with all components .

@DGroves

Thanks for your answer, but are you sure even it's for same  family processor LGA1150, ventirad can be used on MB holes  as it seems there's a square mount (most common) nearly 73 mm each  and on Z230, on lenght it's 100 mm and rectangular shape. Someone let me know about LGA1150 narrow, this should be what is on HP Z230 MB.

But that one, I'm unable to find one.

intel has specced two different cpu form factor sockets the common square one and the narrower one that is usually found on servers and mini-itx based systems

your z230 uses the LGA 1150 pin socket and as far as i'm aware all SFF/Tower boards from the major venders (like HP)  all use the same reference intel cpu socket and not the narrower server type socket

https://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket_1150_LGA1150_H3.html

however some venders "DO" use non std cpu cooler mounting methods that differs from the intel reference cooler

that has the mounting locations spaced 75mm apart and that may be the case with your Z230/.220/210 systems

if so you can use thin metal washers covered with tape and metal nuts to secure the HP cooler like you have done

the washers help distribute the mounting pressure from the cpu springs preventing board warping

edit i just checked and indeed the z2xx systems "DO" use a non std cpu cooler mounting (see attached pict)

z230 cpu cooler.jpg

the HP cooler part#  711578-001 from the HP prodesk 400 600 800 G1 SFF models should also have the same cpu cooler mounting dimensions
