Compaq dc5800
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and older

I have an older Compaq dc5800 microtower that I've been using as a server for experimentation. I understand it has support for Intel vPro/AMT, which I've never used before but would like to try.

I've updated the BIOS to the latest available, v1.60. I've entered the MEBx prompt and set my own password, as well as enabled general Management Engine functionality. However, there are no other configuration options available, including an AMT submenu (see picture). I've also updated the MEBx/ME firmware to version 3.2.10.1041 Rev. A available on HP's support site. I've tried running the Intel AMT config utility on the desktop, but it gives an error saying "Failed to connect to the Intel AMT device (possible reasons - the system does not have it or is not responding)".

Any ideas?

You're very welcome.

If there is a device labeled as a PCI serial port,  that is the AMT  device in need of a driver.

The dc5800 is a stripped down version of the dc7800, which does have the AMT device,  as well as RAID, AHCI, and IDE drive controller settings.

I believe that the dc5800 only has an IDE drive controller setting

The AMD device is enabled by default in the BIOS, so I am about 99% sure that the dc5800 lacks the AMT device.

Hi:

Does that model have the Intel Active Management Technology device?

You need to see the device I highlighted in the device manager in the below screenshot.

I honestly don't know if it has the technology... the HP specs page is disappointingly light on details. It doesn't even mention the available of vPro/ME, even though the firmware is active. And no, it doesn't appear to have a special COM port like that. I thought you'd maybe have to configure AMT first before that's available? I did install the HECI driver so the OS could communicate with the firmware and flash the update.

Thank you for posting Paul!

Ah, bummer. I've been itching to upgrade my server up to a workstation or even server-grade board at some point so I guess that will be the next objective 🙂

Thanks for your help!
