i would really like to go back to WIN 10 1803 but my new machine came with 1809. Just think about it - reinstalling the OS because the current approved build does not allow proper functioning of USB ports - we might as well go back to DOS 6.0 - that was reasonably stable with input peripherals like keyboards and mice.

i don't think the issue is with windows, but rather with the  wireless usb box or the driver,.... i personally maintain over 300+ windows 10 systems, many now have the 1809 build and none of the systems are having any usb related issues whatsoever

and several of the win 10 systems with the 1809 build are z820/z840 workstations

I understand what are you saying but I have seen so many bizarre reports and my own problem is also very similar. I tried two keyboards (wired and wireless, two wired mice 4 different hubs (usb2 unpowered , usb 3 powered VIA VL812 chip, usb3 VL813 chip, USb 3.1 unpowered). They all  behave the same - keyboards and mice generally work if plugged directly in the machine. But if they go in a hub (any of them) even if they are there by themselves - they start misbehaving. On top of that my USB audio is completely distorted when using two different USB audio receivers - both of them fully functional on other machines and with fully functional drivers. Also all input devices and hubs fully functional on other machine (happened to be Win 10 1803  that still have not received the 1809 upgrade).

Funnily enough while I am typing this I am fighting both mouse and keyboard although they are plugged in the machine directly and they worked fine like that yesterday. The behavior is not regular and it changes after each reboot. And there are no viruses on the machine either. Please let me know what can cause a behavior like that. I have been using PCs since 1990 and I have never experienced anything like this.

i would check or simply replace the USB cables with new ones, i have seen many issues due to poor cables, or cables not fully inserted  and bad power supplies that come with usb hubs

the z800/z820/z840 systems are not known for USB hardware related issues............. in all the years these systems have been available HP has not had to issue any USB related patches or motherboard revisions that were for usb related problems

i suspect your usb issues are due to something other than the hp hardware or the base MS Operating system

Did that too. I used several USB 3 cables - original and after market. For audio I used premium "audiophile" cables - Furutech and Wireworld with silver-plated and higher gauge wires. Tried several PSUs - original and after market ones with higher current capacity and measured their stability. I thought of everything I could. Also all hubs are brand new - straight out of the box.

I also do not think that is HP hardware that is causing any problems but more Windows and some combination of drivers. My laptop uses the same USB 3 controller as the Z2 mini workstation but behaves differently and the only software difference is Windows 1803 vs 1809. Also, to add to the problem complexity - all Bluetooth devices - including a mouse - work fine.

I also turned off in power management - "allow windows to switch power off" option - but that did not cause any improvement.
