install the USB card in the topmost slot, (the one above the graphics card slot)

remove the usb keyboard/mouse  then boot up, wait for the spinning circle to stop

once the mouse arrow appears, connect the mouse, and wait for the circle to again become the normal mouse pointer

now do the same for the keyboard

you should now have card installed, keyboard and mouse working

install the usb 3.0 card drivers (make sure the power cable to the card is attached before driver install)

while i normally use the highpoint cards, i do have one just like yours and it also has the PLX chip however this card requires you to connect a power cable to it for proper operation

DGroves,

After spending several frustrating hours trying to get my system to boot with this SATA 3 card I've decided to send it back.

I'd like to try the USB 3.0 High Point 4-Port USB 3.0 PCI-Express 2.0 x 4 HBA RocketU 1144D card you've recommended.

High Point 4-Port USB 3.0 PCI-Express 2.0 x 4 HBA RocketU 1144D

Could I put my Samsung 860 EVO Win 10 system drive into this USB external enclosure?

Plug it into the High Point USB 3.0 card.  Change my boot device to USB and and boot without problems?

Thank you for your help!

i've not used either card as a boot device much less a non MS operating system and as far as i know, no 3rd party USB card is bootable..... only the motherboard USB ports on current systems (made in the past 6 years or so) are bootable

but based on a simple observation of both cards the highpoint has less parts  and also does not pass power to external devices connected to it

what i can say is that on both the z820/z800 using the highpoint card i saw slightly better xfer rates under windows 7 and 10

both cards use the same driver however so feel free to try the drivers from both card makers or directly from the ASMedia site or from the MS driver update catalog i use ver1.16.54.1 and will be testing 1.16.56.1
