1. You'll be much happier if you use a SSD instead of a HDD. Much faster performance. I'd get a roughly 500GB size, and either a recent Samsung or an Intel 545s.
2. I'd upgrade the BIOS from within BIOS to the latest version as my first step. Can you get into BIOS at least? If so I can help you more with that...
3. Do you know about the HP Cloud Recovery Tool? The ZX40 family was the first set of workstation to be supported by this free tool that allows you to download a fine-tuned-by-HP Windows 10 Pro 64-bit workstation installer. The W10Pro64 that gets installed will be an older version (v1089, released 2018), but you can then use Windows Update online to update your OS to the latest W10 version. Use the link HERE for HP workstations.
A caveat is that this is available only for HP workstations that were sent from the factory firmware "branded" for use with the Windows operating system. There will be a Windows icon sticker on your case backplane and also a Windows notation in tiny letters on a bottom sticker stating that. This has to do with licensing... if your box was set up at the factory for Linux it won't be able to use the download because it looks for a firmware code that unlocks its use.
4. Even if your workstation originally came from HP with W7Pro64 installed (most did) the W10 Windows Recovery Tool download will still work fine, and you'll be licensed for W10Pro64 automatically, with a good HP hand-tuned build.
5. No ZX40 workstation officially is eligible for a W11Pro64 install. I've posted in the forum here about how to upgrade using a "hybrid" method to the latest W11 release, W11 22H2, and these installs are getting all the security and W11 22H2 upgrades. Look HERE I'd wait on that for later.... the hybrid method that works best to get W11 22H2 is detailed on page 2 up near the top, with some pictures included. This is for advanced users...
