Several months ago, following a Windows update, my desktop (Compaq 6200 Pro) stopped recognizing devices connected USB.  I've tried everything else and the last thing on the list is to update the BIOS.  The desktop was upgraded from the original Win 7 to Win 10 Pro and 1TB SSD maybe two years ago.  The current BIOS is J01 v02.06 6/9/2011.  What BIOS version do I need that is compatible with Win 10?  (J01 v02.15 ?)  And what is the correct procedure to update?

Thanks in advance

the 6200 pro was never tested with win 10 or win 8.1 the last HP approved OS was windows 8.0 however the hardware itself has no issues whatsoever with running windows 10

many usb errors are caused by  the windows OS  itself

before you try to resolve a problem

take the time to confirm it's a hardware or software issue

download a Linux Live image, this OS will run from ram and detect all of the 6200's hardware if the usb ports work with a mouse or when a usb key is inserted that tells you the issue is with your windows OS and it can be fixed by simply reinstalling the OS

for drivers select windows 8 64bit

and for latest bios (select windows 7 64bit)   00.02.33 Rev.A   released May 1, 2019

sp96026.exe     includes latest microcode for sandy bridge cpu's

i strongly recommend using the DOS method to update the existing bios, to do so run the sp96026 file and cancel the bios update now go to the extracted spxxxx folder and go into the DOS folder and read the docs there on how to manually update

latest bios is 5.03 Rev.B

Thanks for the info.  Attempt to download Linux Live image none of the downloads say "Live" - is that important.  Also, what is PC App Store?  That's what I got as "setup" when I downloaded from Linux site.  Also, since the PC doesn't recognize USB connected devices will I be able to do a live setup from just the download or do I need to do something else?

if you take the time to "READ" a linux distro's web documentation you would have understood that most linux distro's and be used as a Live- load to ram or as a linux OS install

what is PC App Store?...........................answer

again,.................if your usb issue is a windows OS problem

then the USB ports will  work under the Linux OS

your 6200 also has mouse/kbd PS2 style ports

Please lighten up.  I'm trying to solve a problem and I haven't had to go through this before!  Understood - just download the Linux OS.  (And why send me an Ebay ad for a PS2 wired KB/mouse?)  Also, the PC App store Q was because one site download sent me there????

if you have non working usb ports as you state then trying to install anything using a usb based keyboard/mouse is obviously not going to work is it? which is why using the systems built-in ps2 ports is necessary

again please reread my first post carefully and then look at the links in order
