It is a matter of price, and use.  The Z400 plus that processor is cheaper.  There is no doubt the Z420 version 2 is better, however.  The most certain way to tell v1 from v2 is knowing the boot block date from BIOS.  That has been posted about in here quite a bit.  For the Z400 an even easier way is that the v1 had 4 memory slots while the v2 has 6.

Let's say you go for a Z420 v2.... best processor for the money for that is a E5-1650 v2.  The version 2 Z420 has a 2013 boot block date.  It also can run the 1866 very fast memory and the SATA generation III SSDs.

Thanks for the info, SDH! BTW, looking around, I noticed that the X5690 is twice as expensive as the X5680, with apparently a minor higher speed (3,46, vs 3,33 Ghz). Are you aware of any other differences between these processors?

Thx again,

Rien
