@San_cheese,

That is a wonderful plan, and I am looking forward seeing your Upgrade thread! Preferably start your thread in "Business PCs, Workstations and Point of Sale Systems" under "Start a conversation".

Warm Regards,

Dear Community,

Installed a 500GB Netac NV5000-t M.2 NVMe Gen4 x4 SSD as the primary (boot) drive, and reinstalled Windows 11 Home. As a secondary drive, I installed a 1TB Samsung 870 QVO SATA SSD drive.

Last but not least, I tried out an MSI Gaming RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 Shadow 2X OC graphics card (this card didn't work in my HP Pavilion TP01-3003w upgrade project, no matter what I tried), but to my pleasant surprise, this card installed sans any issues whatsoever!

The Userbenchmark test proceeded just fine, and yielded the following scores: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark: "performing above expectations (65th percentile)", The i5-9600KF is "performing above expectations (68th percentile)" at 94.9%, the Nvidia RTX 5070 performed at 102%, the Netac NVMe SSD 500GB scored 242%, the Samsung 870 QVO 1TB scored 96.7%, and the Crucial CT8G4DFS8266.C8FE 2x8GB scored at 86.4%.

I imagine that my Userbenchmark score standing will likely further improve once the 2x16 DDR4 Kingston HyperX Fury RAM arrives.

Kind Regards,

One tip i would like to share is not only using userbenchmark and using other ways to share performance such as using msi afterburner on popular games to compare fps and usage and use other benchmarking tools such as 3Dmark or anandtech as although userbenchmark is good for comparing to other similar rigs to determine if your rig is working properly it is known to poorly measure performance and often have a bias against AMD cpus (leading to CPUS to possibly have incorrect ratings compared to other products as the ranking become more bias to single-core performance due to the AMD bias).

Although it is fine to still use userbenchmark i wouldnt recommend it to determine general performance in games and rather try add different benchmarks to make sure it performs well.

Dear Forum,

Decided to upgrade the 65-watt TDP OEM stock CPU heatsink/cooler with a Thermalright Peerless Assassin PA90 SE Dual-Tower CPU Cooler, rated up to ~100-watt TDP processors.  Should show up by Sunday morning, thanks to Amazon's Prime. Also added a 500GB SK Hynix Gold S31 SATA SSD, because, well, it was laying forlorn in one of my parts & bits drawers.

Also (super-gel) glued the ODD bezel onto the front panel, because A.) I couldn't order a proper ODD 'dummy' bezel cover -as in: nowhere to be found, and B.) I needed to cover up the rectangular front panel ODD opening since I permanently removed the drives bay/cage, and thus the DVD reader/writer.

Kind Regards,

Esteemed Community,

Installed three "ARCTIC P9 Max - PC Fan High-Performance 92 mm PWM case Fans", one to replace the stock rear (system) cooling fan, and two installed externally on the side panel -one specifically to provide forced airflow to the CPU heatsink/cooling fan, and one specifically placed to provide forced airflow for the graphics card:

And I did remove 85mm Ø round sections off the side panel for each of the cooling fans to create unobstructed air intake.

[EDIT:] Latest Userbenchmark scores: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark, showing further performance improvements. Stay tuned.

Community,

The competitvely priced "Thermalright Peerless Assassin 90 SE Dual-Tower CPU Cooler" arrived, and installed:

Used the blue (LGA) "1700" standoffs + screws and the (LGA) "115X/1200" brackets.  Also replaced the enclosed Thermalright 12V 0.10A "TL-P9" cooling fan with a Foxconn PVA092G12S 12V 0.40A for more cooling power.  And as you can see, I also installed an additional cooling fan located just behind the RTX 5070.

First (preliminary) tests suggest ~10° C lower CPU temps.

[EDIT:] Upon looking at the picture I just posted above, I noticed that the additional cooling fan I mentioned must have failed, as it was not moving.  Checked the power, and that was fine, so replaced that fan with the just 'abandoned' Thermalright TL-P9 cooling fan.

[EDIT:] And yes, my 'cable management' leaves to be desired at the moment: will clean it up once I'm done upgrading.

Kind Regards,

Community,

Monday, August 18th reporting: still waiting for the 2x16GB Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 2666 MHz UDIMM RAM sticks.

Ordered a 4TB Hitachi Ultrastar HUS724040ALE640 (p/n: 0F14683) 64MB Cache, 7.2K, 6.0 Gb/s, SATA 3.5" HDD as an additional secondary storage drive.  Not really needed -then again, this upgrade build is more a proof-of-concept project.

Still room for system optimization, stay tuned.

[EDIT:] Replaced the 500GB SK Hynix Gold SATA SSD (secondary drive) with a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

[EDIT:] And added a 2TB Western Digital WDC WD2003FYYS SATA HDD -waiting for the 4TB Hitachi Ultrastar 7K4000 SATA HDD: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

All four drives run A-OK in this system.

Dear Forum,

The 4TB Hitachi (HGST) Ultrastar 7K4000 HDD arrived and successfully installed.

This created the best Userbenchmark performance scores so far: "Overall this PC is performing above expectations (69th percentile). This means that out of 100 PCs with exactly the same components, 31 performed better. The overall PC percentile is the average of each of its individual components", with "Outstanding" Bench descriptions for all components: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.
