I got a 340L1AA card for this workstation but the workstation does not have a GPIO port on the motherboard.
Can I run it without?  IF not, what cardi s recommended to add thunderbolt to this workstation?

if the motherboard was not designed for thunderbolt, then it can't be added

HP lists no thunderbolt option on the Z4R, so it appears you lack the necessary hardware support to use it

I'm new here... where are the options listed?

I wonder if a 3rd party card could be added?

for HP systems, looking at the model computers "quickspecs" will show the base system and available HP approved options

Dell,Lenovo and other major OEM's have similar, they are just named differently

For example, do a google search for:

ZCentral 4R QuickSpecs PDF

Attached below is the most recent one, from 6/12/24, the 27th version. Then you can open it and do a CTRL + F search for thunder or thunderbolt.  Nada. These are handy to track changes in processors and memory over time, find build details, and search for HP-supported options. The HP PartSurfer is good to know how to use.

Another good google search is for:

ZCentral 4R manuals (download that biggest one)
