What is the maximum drive height in millimeters for a replacement hard drive in a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Desktop Mini PC. The EliteDesk 800 G3 has a single 2 1/2 inch drive slot but I can't find any information on whether the maximum height is 9mm or 15mm or some other height.
I want to install a hard drive bigger than 2 TB but drives bigger than 2TB are 15mm high. The maximum drive size that I can find in a 9mm high drive is only 2TB.
I would be grateful if anyone knows the answer. I tried HP Support but they only provided me with the form factor for the drives that ship with new PCs.
Thank you,
Rich

Hi
I would also check the power consumption etc.
And the carrier would indicate the Maximum size, because it is quite usual for airflow to aid cooling and a larger device may upset the overall cooling efficiency.
So short answer is- I Dont Know.

since the tower version has a empty 5.25 bay, you can insert ANY 2.5 or 5.25 drive into this space including the 2.5 15mm drive when using the "proper"2.5 to 5.25 cooling tray/adapter
if you have the SFF version, then 9 or 12.5mm drives will fit as these are considered standard sizes in the industry
15mm drives are found in servers, and some NAS devices these drives usually require/have a 5.25 carrier that holds the
drive and provides cooling to parts to the drives circuit board. as such they are not really used as a bare 2.5 drive unless the device that uses them provides proper forced air cooling

below is a amazon link to one such 15mm drive carrier/cooling tray
https://www.amazon.com/WDSL00S-IcePack-Drive-Mounting-Heatsink/dp/B008L5TQIS
and below is said 15mm drive , note the discription states not for most laptops/ssf desktops

with the above said, you can check yourself if there is space for a 2.5 15mm drive using a tape measure to check
however even if the drive fits, cooling will remain a serious issue as these drives get quite hot and will fail if not properly cooled
