HP Elite Tower 800 G9 Desktop PC (7E5P9AV)

Dear all,

I have had a HP ProDesk PC for years and now the time has come to leave it behind: it can't run W11. So yesterday I received my brand new HP Elite Tower 800 G9 Desktop PC and I have been very busy re-installing all the programs I need and migrating all settings and stuff.. After a strange hickup (I could not update the BIOS, because my monitor was too small...) I managed to get almost everything running.

On my old PC I have moved all relevant data I had collected and generated through the years to an extra Samsung SATA SSD, which I installed just a few years ago. My goal is to screw that 2,5 '' SSD into the new PC, so I my data is migrated. I have done some investigating: it seems that the text on the body of the G9 suggests, that I can screw the SSD to the body of the PC. That will probably work. Next, I see that the SATA data-cable I have will also fit into the SATA socket(s) of the G9. But the third item is more difficult: where do I get power for the SSD? There are no SATA power cables inside the G9 at all???

I do see the 6-pin socket on the motherboard, with the text SATA PWR next to it. So I suppose I must purchase a cable to power my extra SSD. Does anyone know which cable(s) I need? Does HP recommend specific cables to power SATA devices?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all,

Since my last message I had ordered 2 SATA power cables. The first one had a 6-pin mini connector, which was way too small for my PC. The next one (shipped from Hongkong) arrived today and it works: https://www.moddiy.com/products/6-Pin-to-4-x-SATA-HDD-DVD-Power-Modular-Cable-All-Black-for-HP-Z240....

With some fiddling I managed to screw the SSD to the case of the PC (the screws are in the holes marked B at the front of the PC):

And I attached the new cable and the SATA data-cable I had, like this:

The SSD appears in Windows 11, so I guess the cable is fine 😉

Hi:

I got the parts list from a random HP Elite Tower 800 G9 PC.

https://partsurfer.hp.com/?searchtext=5V945EA

From what I can tell, the SATA power cable you need has this part number and description:

N02706-001
SPS-CABLE SATA poweR 290-90-330mm FY22

The part is on backorder from HP and their cost is a whopping € 83.92.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to check on eBay or other parts resellers.

Below is the link to the list of HPs authorized parts resellers in alphabetical order by country.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for your answer. I checked the item, but ordering it seems impossible. I am now trying to contact sales support, to get more info about the item and how to order it. I am a bit reluctant to order one abroad (even though the pricing is terrible)

You're very welcome.

I looked around too and could not find anything on eBay.nd or Amazon.nd

Hopefully, you will be able to find the cable somewhere and at a decent price.

Hello Paul and others,

I have received this picture from HP, with recommendations for resellers. Unfortunately this part is not available anywhere and I have no idea how long it will take before it is ☹️.

So I would really like to find an alternative, which is less expensive (some resellers charge €140,- for it!) and which is available. Could anyone recommend one? BTW I only need to attach one SSD, so the cable does not really need 3 connectors...

Do you think one like this would work?

It has a 6-pin connector to the motherboard with the retaining clip in the same place, and 4 SATA power connectors.

You just have to hope its long enough because I don't see a dimension for the length of the cable.

That's the problem: it might (and it might not?). I have not been able to figure out, what the 6-pin connector is called in the 'computer world' does anyone know? Is it 6p PCI express?
